Located in Barrie and reporting to the Associate Dean, the incumbent supports the academic programs in the School of Computing Studies - Data Centre, by providing technical support to students and faculty. The incumbent demonstrates and monitors Data Centre students’ safe and efficient use of equipment in the Data Centre labs. The incumbent is also responsible to ensure that the labs function on a day-to-day basis as well as maintaining a yearly schedule of maintenance. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

- Assisting with building and maintaining Data Centre Infrastructure to support student learning and applied research projects (i.e.: Big Data Analytics, Mobile Application Development and other Computer Study areas)
- Assisting with set-up, trouble shooting, and maintenance of Hadoop clusters, virtual machines, sensors and mobile devises for student learning
- Maintaining Computer Studies equipment (including but not limited Workstations, Domain Controllers, firewalls, switches, routers etc.) and supplies which includes maintaining a yearly schedule of equipment / classroom maintenance
- Maintaining accounts for vendor supplied academic software (e.g. MS DreamSpark, VMware Academic), as well as the VMware Lab Manager environment
- Building, testing, deploying, and maintaining Operating Systems configurations in VMware Lab Manager environment
- Supporting departmental technology accounts, subscriptions, and supporting students with cloud services (i.e.: Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform, and other software services)
- Completing backup and imaging of computers, servers, routers, switches, firewalls, and other lab equipment
- Supporting students in BYOD programs via student helpdesk (e.g., troubleshooting installation of software, diagnosing potential technology issues affecting student laptops)
- Demonstrating, modeling and over-seeing safe use of equipment and ensures proper safety procedures are followed
- Providing technical advice to students and faculty in use of classroom assets and equipment.
- Supporting students who participate in Bring Your Own Devise (BYOD) program by ensuring appropriate software in installed, and troubleshooting issues
- Managing student and faculty accounts for a variety of internal and external web-based services
- Assisting with preparing and performing demonstrations of computer and network equipment and software relating to classrooms
- Performing inventory control duties such as purchasing and tracking of assets and consumables (routers, servers, switches, kits, cabling supplies, iPads etc.)
- Evaluating and resolving problems associated with physical space allocation in the classrooms and storage areas
- Planning and implementing setup of special events such as the Innovation Showcase, as well as Preview and Open House sessions

**QUALIFICATIONS**:

- Successfully completed a two-year post-secondary diploma in a field of study that may include, but is not limited to computer systems and networking with courses focusing on the technical aspects of computing
- Training in health and safety, customer service and conflict resolution bring important skills to the technician’s role
- Two years’ experience in the field of technical support of information technology
- Experience and certification with Cisco routers and switches is an asset
- Experience and certification with Windows and Linus server operating systems is an asset
- Experience working with students is an asset
- Experience in training and demonstrating skills to others
- Experience in ordering supplies and inventory management
- Computer skills using the MS Office Suite
- Demonstrated ability to communicate information in a clear concise manner
- Interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain relationships with various stakeholders
- Must be self-directed with the ability to work independently and as a team member
- Awareness of health and safety rules and regulations
- Proven analytical, critical thinking, decision making, and problem-solving skills
- Demonstrated planning, coordinating and time management skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Teaching and training adults certification would be an asset
