**Job Summary**
The Wildfire, Security & Response Assistants perform a variety of watershed protection activities related to the management of the Greater Victoria Water Supply Area (GVWSA) lands. This position has a key focus on patrol work for wildfire detection and initial attack, security and response to other watershed incidents.

**_These positions will be required to work a variety of shifts, including evenings and weekends, to meet operational needs._**

**_Currently the shift for these positions is Thursday - Monday._**

**Typical Duties and Responsibilities**
People working in this role can expect to be responsible for performing the following duties. This list is not meant to be comprehensive and other related duties similar in scope and complexity may be performed.
- Works in a combination of field (predominantly) and office settings. Fieldwork may be physically demanding and under adverse conditions.
- Performs wildfire/security patrols and related patrol duties, provides fire watch duties during moderate/high/extreme fire danger conditions.
- Performs coordination of patrol crews and standby, patrol/standby preparation and administration.
- Assists in training, guiding and directing other staff conducting patrol work.
- Liaison with the public, trespassers, hunters, miners, including working with internal and external stakeholders on education, compliance and enforcement.
- Reports security incidents from patrols, enters incidents into the watershed protection database.
- Assists with wildlife patrols/monitoring, follows up on wildlife reports near facilities or other wildlife issues.
- Conducts initial attack fire suppression activities. Acts as Incident Commander when needed.
- Clears fallen trees that block roadways with chainsaw or other handtools.
- Inspects structures for security breaches or concerns.
- Responds to spills and other environmental emergencies. Distributes, inspects and maintains emergency preparedness and safety equipment.
- Writes reports and provides analysis in areas of responsibility.
- Provides watershed orientations to contractors and CRD visitors.
- Services and maintains sanitation facilities located within the GVWSA.
- Escorts contractors, researchers, vehicles carrying hazardous materials, and others on GVWSA roads.
- Assists in the installation and maintenance of signage.
- Assists with maintenance/inspection of buildings and grounds.
- Conducts watershed protection division activities (such as brushing and weeding, road clearing, tree thinning, pruning, other silviculture work and assisting with reservoir boom maintenance).
- Must be able to work effectively within a group environment and alone, to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing with divisional and departmental staff, and the public.
- Performs the duties of a Watershed Operator and acts as Gatekeeper, as required.
- Ensures assigned activities are carried out in a manner that protects water quality as the prime objective. Notifies supervisor of any potential environmental risks and takes immediate action when necessary.
- Ensures that all work is performed safely, always complying with established safety and safe work policies, practices, legislation and regulation. Reports all unsafe work activities or conditions immediately to the supervisor/manager; and takes appropriate responsible remedial action immediately.
- Follows all policies, procedures and standards of the CRD.
- Performs other related duties as required.
