The Opportunity

The Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) branch of the AER provides geological information and advice about the geology of Alberta to the Government of Alberta, the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER), industry, and the public to support the exploration, sustainable development, regulation, and conservation of Alberta's resources.

Your Key Responsibilities:

- Compile data sources that reveal the extent of glacier retreat with the Albertan Rockies since the culmination of the Little Ice Age.
- Analyse and interpret this data to assess the extent of glacier retreat.
- Identify new and potentially significant geological exposures that have not been previously surveyed.
- Create a geological map showing the distribution of these exposures and associated glacier retreat patterns in a Geographic Information System (GIS) environment.

Qualifications:

- Currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate geoscience studies with a specialization in geology, geography, or environmental sciences.
- Has a foundational understanding of geology, glaciology, and mapping.
- Completion of an introductory mapping/terrain sciences course is considered an asset.
- Good verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Basic computer skills and working knowledge of MS Office and ArcGIS.
- A willingness and ability to perform some field investigations.

Additional Requirements/Information:

- This role has a business requirement to work from Edmonton.
- This position is a full-time summer student position which is expected to last approximately four months.
- Proof of enrollment in a registered institution and returning to studies following this placement will be a condition of hire.
