Academic and Career Services at The University of Winnipeg endeavors to create a welcoming and supportive atmosphere where students can ask questions, seek assistance and obtain the information and support they need to be successful in their studies.

The **Academic Advisor is a full-time term position** focused on providing academic advising for students, and support for academic and other types of appeals. The incumbent will take a holistic, developmental advising approach, provide a range of academic supports and make referrals to on and off campus resources as needed.

**Responsibilities**:

- Provides academic advising on both an individual basis and in groups to undergraduate students at University of Winnipeg using a developmental model.
- Collaborates with other Academic Advisors, as well as other areas of Student Services.
- Provides current students with accurate and appropriate information on course, major, degree and graduation requirements.
- Supports students in decision making and planning for their education and career goals.
- Explains terminology and facilitates WebAdvisor navigation for first year students.
- Advises students participating in special cohorts as needed.
- Assesses and evaluates needs of registering students, takes discretionary action and solves problems as they occur in registration.
- Provides first level counselling and support to students and refers to UWinnipeg counselling services when appropriate.
- Monitors students’ academic progress and assists students with strategies for academic success.
- Authorizes late registrations, course overloads, medical or other types of withdrawals as well as academic plans of probationary students, based on knowledge of Senate guidelines and student needs.
- Supports academic needs of regular, probationary, and conditional status students, as well as students who wish to withdraw from courses
- Demonstrates sensitivity to cultural differences and norms.
- Interprets policies, procedures and regulations and assesses student concerns in order to resolve issues, problems or conflicts that arise with students. Works to resolve issues both through formal channels (appeals process) and informally as appropriate.
- Assesses barriers to learning and refers to services within the University.
- Provides support to students and refers to specialized services and community resources as needed.
- Advocates on behalf of students.
- Maintains a current knowledge base regarding UW policies, procedures and regulations as well as current trends in higher education.
- May be called upon to represent the University externally.
- Advises students on the formal appeals processes available to students.
- Researches, prepares and presents individual student appeals for the Senate Sub-committee on appeals. Participates in the discussion process on the Senate Appeals Sub-committee.
- Prepares documentation and evidence for financial appeal cases and participates on the Financial Appeal committee as needed.
- Liaises with faculty and academic departmental staff.
- Create and revises posters with accurate information for students.
- Facilitates First Year Information Sessions, works collaboratively with other Academic Advisors on communication initiatives.
- Contributes to Orientation planning in cooperation with other Student Services personnel.

**Qualifications**:

- Undergraduate degree in a related discipline or equivalent of experience.
- At least 3 years of directly related advising and administrative experience.
- Must have thorough knowledge of all B.A./B.Sc./B.Kin/B.P.H.E./B.B.AB.AB.A. degree programs and graduation requirements.
- Must be thoroughly familiar with Senate regulations and University policy.
- Must have thorough knowledge of registration and Student Records policies and procedures.
- Must be familiar with a variety of campus and off campus resources and be able to make referrals as appropriate.
- Must have well developed interpersonal, organizational, written and oral communication skills.
- Computer skills related to online registration system and presentation software.
- Must be able to assess student interests, aptitudes and goals.
- Must be sensitive to the needs and concerns of students.
- Must be fair, flexible and able to adapt to a cross-cultural setting.
- Must be able to make independent and consistent judgments and decisions and show initiative.
- Must be able to work co-operatively with members of the office and the University community as a whole.

**An equivalent combination of education, experience, skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.**
