**Role Responsibilities**:
Alberta Justice, Legal Services Division (Division), has three Director positions, two for the legal team supporting the ministries of Health and Mental Health and Addiction and one for the Justice and Public Safety and Emergency Services and Jobs and Immigration legal teams.
The team supporting Health and Mental Health and Addiction provides a full range of specialized solicitor services on a diverse and complex range of issues relating to Alberta’s health care system, including:
- Alberta’s regulated health professions;
- physician compensation;
- privacy issues involving the Health Information Act and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act;
- public health;
- continuing care;
- mental health and addiction;
- governance issues involving the client Ministry’s agencies, boards and commissions;
- the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan and all government-sponsored drug and supplementary health benefit programs;
- audit and compliance reviews of health practitioners’ claims;
- matters involving protections for persons in care; and
- aboriginal law issues involving the health care system.
The Justice and Public Safety and Emergency Services Legal Team provides legal and strategic advice to its client ministries, including the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the Chief Provincial Firearms Office, and the Law Enforcement Review Board. Justice and Public Safety and Emergency Services Legal Team lawyers also lead major legislative reform initiatives.
The Jobs and Immigration Legal Team provides legal and strategic advice to the Government of Alberta, as regulator of labour relations, occupational health and safety, and employment law matters. The team also provide legal and strategic advice respecting the development and delivery of jobs and labour market programming, immigration and newcomer settlement, foreign qualifications, multiculturalism, anti-racism policies and programs, professional governance, and labour mobility. They advise on statutory interpretation, policy development, and legislative changes for numerous pieces of legislation regulating Alberta’s workplaces, including all labour relations, employment standards, occupational health and safety, and workers’ compensation.
The responsibilities of the position include:
- Providing leadership and direction to a team/teams of legal officers providing legal services to client ministries ensuring timely, strategic and exceptional service.
- Providing leadership in identifying and reviewing emerging legal and policy issues and raising awareness of impact on the operations of the Legal Services Division and Government of Alberta ministries.
- Providing senior legal services and related strategic advice, recommendations, consultation, direction, liaison and communication.
- Providing leadership, advice and direction in a variety of areas to improve the operational effectiveness of the Legal Services Division in meeting the different needs of client ministries.
- Developing and maintaining strategic relationships and alliances to identify opportunities to effectively collaborate on issue resolution and to improve communication and understanding of issues within the Legal Services Division and with client ministries.
- As a member of the Legal Services Division, provide leadership and expert consultation, advice and collaboration in the execution of strategies and plans that support the Division's goals and changing priorities.
