**Overview**

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) is a national museum dedicated to the evolution, celebration and future of human rights. It is the first national museum in Canada to be built outside the National Capital Region. Located in the heart of Canada in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the CMHR rises from the Prairie earth at The Forks, which has been a meeting place for over six thousand years.

***Purpose of Position**

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) is centered around the idea that respect and understanding of human rights can serve as a positive force for change in the world. The Communications Advisor will support our collective efforts to build a workplace culture that is inclusive, equitable, innovative and focused on inspiring action.

Reporting to the Director, Public Affairs, the Communications Advisor will provide assistance and support in the production of communication products and planning of communication activities and events for the CMHR.

The incumbent will be a strong and thoughtful communicator, critical thinker and innovator, and will bring a collaborative approach to their role.

**Key Responsibilities**
- Contributes to a culture that promotes respect, equity, inclusion and innovation, and models anti-racist and accountable behaviours.
- Prepares written communication products, including feature stories, presentations, responsive points, speeches and talking points, newsletter articles, web content, corporate reports and briefing documents, fact sheets, brochures and other materials.
- Revises, edits and proofreads communications.
- Delivers presentations on behalf of the Museum.
- Conducts independent research in preparing communication products and or services. Research may include interviews with internal and external stakeholders, media coverage, policy documents, information archives, computer databases and website content.
- Supports the development of responses to inquiries made to the Museum, including those made on social media.
- Conducts daily media monitoring and assists the Media Relations Specialist in the preparation of quarterly and other earned media reports.
- Provides support and guidance around internal communications needs, including regular development of material for the Intranet site, preparation of responsive points and assisting in the development of internal communications products.
- Assists and serves as the back-up to the Media Relations Specialist for creating media products, coordinating or conducting media interviews on the Museum’s behalf and assisting with the development of news releases and media advisories.

**Required Qualifications**
- A university degree in journalism, communications, political science, public policy, or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience.
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience in at least one area of communications (e.g., public relations, internal communications, writing and editing communications material, media relations); experience in analytics in earned and social media.
- Commitment to human rights principles, including respect, equity, inclusion and dignity for all.
- Ability to present facts in language and style that is appropriate to the target audience.
- Ability to identify basic risks associated with a communications strategy/plan and raise pertinent issues in a timely fashion.
- Professional writing and editing skills; the ability to inform others, increase awareness, persuade or change behaviour.
- Proficiency with the Microsoft suite of products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and exercise tact and diplomacy in all undertakings.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong time management skills, with the ability to work under pressure, multi-task and prioritize.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.

**Desired Qualifications**
- Experience in more than one aspect of communications (e.g., public relations, media relations, communications planning, donor communications, strategic planning) is an asset.
- Ability to interpret key points emerging from meetings or discussions that are complex or sensitive in nature.
- Ability to convey complex information in writing which is clear, concise and accessible.
