- The Parks Department is looking to hire a regular full-time Parks Worker. The position involves maintenance, custodial and manual work involving the care and upkeep of one or more parks and/or recreational or playground areas. The incumbent is responsible for performing semi-skilled gardening, landscaping and construction tasks for the maintenance and construction of the floral areas, turf, sports fields, playgrounds and related adjacent areas and for the maintenance, cleanliness and minor repair of parks buildings, and performing semi-skilled construction, landscaping and maintenance tasks. The individual operates saws, brush cutters, chainsaws and performs related forestry operations, ensures access to public buildings, patrols parks, drives a pickup truck and maintains records and reports. Working under mínimal supervision and exercising some independence of action and judgement in day-to-day functions, the incumbent refers unusual problems or policy matters to a superior who checks and reviews the work to ensure maintenance of established standards.
- **The successful applicant will possess**:

- Considerable knowledge of the assigned park areas, gardens, ornamental areas, buildings, sports fields, trails and playgrounds and of the rules and regulations governing the use of the same;
- Sound knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in performing routine maintenance and construction tasks;
- Working knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in maintaining and constructing grounds, buildings and shrubs, trees and flower beds;
- The ability to perform a variety of grounds and maintenance tasks, unskilled repair work and unskilled and semi-skilled gardening, construction and maintenance duties and do so under mínimal supervision;
- The ability to deal courteously with the public; understand and carry out oral instructions; perform manual tasks; complete non-complex forms and reports; and operate equipment used in the work such as back pack sprayer, cultivator, leaf blower, gas-powered weed eaters, power mowers and power saw;
- Skill in the use and care of building maintenance, gardening and power tools used in the work;

**Desired skills and experience**:

- Working knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in natural park trail maintenance and construction; and horticulture maintenance practices;
- Experience in constructing timber frame style bridges boardwalks and handrails; constructing and maintaining various types of parks trails and pathways systems;
- Sound knowledge in maintenance of natural parkland trails drainage works, including installation and maintenance of grading and drainage works;
- Experience in maintenance of parks flowers, shrub beds and ornamental trees;
- Sound knowledge in planting methods and best practices related to organic land care;

**Qualifications**
- Grade 10 supplemented by completion of some basic horticulture courses plus some experience in general parks maintenance and gardening work or an equivalent combination of training and experience. A valid class 5 B.C. Driver’s Licence and a valid Integrated Pest Management Certificate are required.
