INDIGENOUS CULTURAL SUPPORT WORKER

JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Station Street Community Program Operations Manager (“SSC POM”), the Indigenous Cultural Support Worker will provide daily supports within the program, community building, arranging regularly scheduled in-house meetings with any and all residents, advocacy and facilitating connections to other community resources where needed.

Working as a collaborative team, with Management, Residence Supervisors, Coordinators and external agencies to develop, implement and review individual resident case plans. Cultural outreach and activity coordination for PHS will also be an important component of this position; bringing cultural safety, access, and ceremony to residents of the DTES. Honour and recognition of the work being done on the unceded traditional territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil Waututh) and sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) Coast Salish peoples will be a constant in the responsibilities of this role.

SOCIETY PHILOSOPHY

The PHS Community Services Society provides refuge, services, advocacy and supportive affordable housing for those who are poorly served elsewhere in the community due to their physical health, mental health, behavior, substance usage, involvement with the criminal justice system or for those who are homeless. The Society fosters a sense of community within the PHS’s Projects, Programs or in the Society at large, which encourages its members to be accepting of and offer support to one another. This is achieved through enabling each person to function at the level determined by that person; allowing each person to determine for themselves the time, place, course and method of therapeutic treatment chosen if any; fostering an environment within any project or program which accepts, has faith in, forgives, and looks to the good in each member. The Society actively seeks to find an alternative to eviction in every situation.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Contributes to a collaborative working relationship and communication between internal/external stakeholders to; develop, manage and evaluate participant care plans, which promote cooperative goal achievement considering client needs first, and contributes to an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect.
- Under the supervision of the Project Operations Manager, this position will support and advocate for residents at Station Street Community, creating space for hearing resident concerns.
- Using a holistic approach, utilizes traditional Indigenous practices with a focus on building community, recognizing family strengths and assets, and individual and cultural resiliencies by promoting and supporting traditional cultural teachings and practices for our residents, agency, and community.
- Guide families through a process of self-assessing their housing needs in a culturally relevant way
- Develop housing readiness with the families, in order to maximize their success in maintaining housing
- Provide teachings, knowledge of Indigenous and urban Indigenous culture, traditions, and history as a way of supporting the family's connection to their culture and community.
- Liaising respectfully and professionally with government agencies and other service providers; attend and participate in case conferences to support residents having their needs met.
- Observing and supports family interactions; daily living support, as well as the behaviour, appearance, and condition of family members. Supervises visits of family members as required.
- Provides input regarding clients’ needs, performance, and progress, and assists the supervisor to develop plans to meet needs.
- Facilitates group and individual training sessions, and provides instruction and demonstrations in a variety of areas such as alternative parenting strategies, and life skills.
- Identifies community resources to meet clients’ needs, and provides related information to clients.
- Completes and maintains related records and documentation as appropriate.
- Accompanies clients on outings such as appointments, shopping and leisure activities.
- Participates in team meetings and in-service training as required
- Overdose prevention and response.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE
- Minimum Diploma in Social Services, Indigenous Studies with a minimum two years’ experience is preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in a related field is required.
- Current First Aid, CPR, Narcan, Overdose Management training is essential
- Knowledge of mental health and health issues: FAS, ADHD, Personality Disorders, Stress and Anxiety Disorders, HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, Psychotropic Medications etc.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
- Ability to work independently and in cooperation with others.
