Nunavut Virtual Counselling service aims to increase access to culturally informed care to our Indigenous peoples of the North who are experiencing mental health and addictions concerns and who face barriers accessing MHA services and/or live in geographically remote areas of Canada where access to care is challenging. The Mental Health Worker will contribute to the following core program functions: engagement and relationship-building; intake and screening; specialized assessment; care planning, clinical intervention and follow up; transition support, system navigation, advocacy and referral; and service and program evaluation. The Mental Health Worker maintains an active clinical caseload providing comprehensive assessment, clinical interventions, follow-up and transition planning, as per the mandate of the Nunavut Virtual Counselling Services. The Mental Health Worker is a hybrid position that is part of a small specialized interdisciplinary team that provides virtual counselling services.

**QUALIFICATIONS**:

- Degree in Nursing, Social work, Occupational therapy or Psychology, masters preferred.
- Must be a Regulated Health Professional with an Ontario College that can practice the act of Psychotherapy
- Minimum 3-5 years experience in a comparable role working with the defined population required
- Demonstrated knowledge and practiced skills in intake assessment, care planning, supportive counselling and system navigation when working with youth, adults, families with mental health and addiction difficulties.
- Knowledge of the history and effects of systemic racism on indigenous peoples and their ability to access mental health and addictions supports; extensive knowledge of the history of our First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples in Canada and the unique considerations in delivering mental health services to them.
- Current and demonstrated knowledge of motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioural techniques and/or interventions, highly recommended.
- Proven ability to perform comprehensive mental health and addiction assessment and establish rapport with target population
- Demonstrated health-teaching and knowledge translation skills in the target population
- Proven ability to work collaboratively and in partnership with a transdisciplinary team and partner agencies/organizations both on the team and in the community
- Thorough understanding of the issues impacting youth/adults from a social determinants of health perspective
- Ability to communicate in other languages preferred
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Demonstrates a strong recovery-oriented, client-focused philosophy in all interactions.
- Current knowledge of Mental Health Act, Healthcare Consent Act, Substitute Decisions Act, and Privacy Legislation.
- Proven ability to work with mínimal supervision and able to prioritize work demands
- Basic computer ability/knowledge is required (e.g. typing assessments and data entry
- Good work performance and attendance record is essential.

**RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Maintains an active clinical caseload providing comprehensive assessment, consultation, clinical interventions, follow-up and transition planning, as per the mandate of the Nunavut Virtual Counselling Services.
- Formulates client-centered treatment recommendations in alignment with the program goals. Reviews and evaluates the recommendations, treatment, care/service plan in consultation with the client, family and other service providers. Take a holistic and client-centered approach to care planning that identifies client strengths and addresses barriers to accessing care, including systemic racism.
- Provide supportive counselling with a focus on validation and empathy using a strengths-based framework.
- Provide brief courses of psychotherapy (must have experience with CBT and solution-focused therapy);
- Work in partnership with provincial agencies/programs to provide psychotherapy to Indigenous clients via virtual platforms
- Makes recommendations for treatment plans jointly with team members (both SJHH and Nunavut partners) and in collaboration with youth/family/adult. Works closely with team members (both SJHH and Nunavut) to identify and develop strategies/linkages to address any additional support needs of the youth/family/adult.
