**Position Summary**: Discover the history of computing, computers, and those who developed them in this course. From ancient China up to the near-present, we explore the worlds and experiences of computing pioneers, and follow the growth of modern computing from ENIAC to the personal computer revolution. The exploration of digital computing covers the history of Silicon Valley and moves around the world, examining the invention of the transistor and the internet, and their effects. These histories are understood within the cultural, business and political frameworks that shaped computing, including World War II and cryptography, the Cold War, counterculture, and innovation ecosystems. The implications of computing are also discussed in the spread of e
- waste, the possibilities of blockchain and debates over the “singularity” and superintelligence.
