Job Summary

The Interviewer/Outreach Worker operates as a member of a multidisciplinary, collaborative research team. The Interviewer recruits and prescreens potential participants, conduct structured interviews of eligible research participants enrolled in the relevant projects, and assists in data collection, data cleansing, and data entry resulting from interviews. The Interviewer/Outreach Worker also performs outreach activities and connects people with community services as needed.

Organizational Status

The Interviewer/outreach worker position is positioned within Dr. Deering's Research Program within the UBC Division of Social Medicine at the Department of Medicine.

Work Performed

Recruits potential participants, provide information and answer questions about research studies.

Conducts quantitative structured interviews with eligible participants and performs outreach for follow-up interviews.

Conducts outreach and interviews off-site at community services and/or other facilities with varying environments (e.g. drop-in centres, shelters, non-profit residences, private SROs, health care facilities, and public spaces in inner city settings) using approved transportation options.

Reviews questionnaires for completeness and accuracy.

Ensures policies and procedures for data management are followed, and all documents are entered and filed as required by ethical guidelines.

Responsible for processing participant honoraria, including paying participants and recording honoraria for daily float reconciliation.

Transports blood and urine samples to St. Paul's Hospital as needed.

Participates in knowledge translation presentations to community organizations as needed.

Assists with training staff on data collection protocols as needed.

Refers participants to appropriate services and/or provides initial support when required. Performs other related duties as required.

This position works with a high degree of independence and responsibility and exercises a considerable amount of judgment. The incumbent will work in a designated, appropriate workspace. Travel to meetings may be required from time to time.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Works within well-defined guidelines and procedures but exercises judgment in establishing priorities and carrying tasks through to completion; new or unusual problems are referred to the supervisor.

This position entails a high level of confidentiality and discretion. Failure to maintain research and program information in confidence could result in damage to credibility and poor relations with internal and external partners. Errors in judgment could result in serious financial or reputational consequences, undermining the project's ability to meet commitments, including the inability to successfully meet granting agencies' deliverables. Poor public/private sector relationships could result in a negative image of UBC and may impact levels of research funding made available through partnerships. Errors could result in significant concerns regarding the liability, credibility, and integrity of the Faculty and the University.

Supervised by the Project Coordinator, reports to the UBC Faculty Member.

Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in health care, social services or social sciences preferred. Minimum two 2 years experience in frontline/ community services experience with marginalized communities we serve.
