Youth Outreach Worker

Richmond School District operates 38 elementary schools, 10 secondary schools, alternate programs, continuing education and a number of additional facilities. The district enrolls approximately 21,000 students (K-12) and employs over 3000 dedicated staff.

This position provides social/emotional support for secondary students within an Alternate Adolescent population and assists them in developing social/emotional skills and/or modifying behaviour. These students often require academic remediation and support and are often unable or not ready to attend other school programs. Students may demonstrate significant delay in the development of academic knowledge and skill; moderate to severe learning disorders; FAS, ADD, or other neurological syndromes; severe behaviour disorders; dysfunctional interpersonal skills; a history of poor attendance; low motivation for tasks that require persistence; high involvement with the youth “counter culture”.

Major

**Responsibilities**:
Works independently with individual students or groups of students or in partnership with the Teacher(s), as requested by the Teacher(s), to provide social/emotional support and/or social/emotional skill development and/or modification of behaviour.

Implements support plans developed by the Teacher(s), or develops and implements support plans independently or in collaboration with the Teacher(s) as requested by the Teacher(s).

Ensures active ongoing communication with the Teacher(s) concerning his/her activities and the response of the student(s).

Seeks advice and direction from the Teacher(s) when unanticipated issues arise which are beyond the intended type and level of involvement with the student(s).

When requested by the Teacher(s), communicates with parents, guardians or caregivers.

Recognizes potential crisis situations, analyzes such situations and responds appropriately.

Adheres to District policy and legislation with respect to conduct, confidentiality and the duty to report.

Generally works with the designated Alternate Program but may work in the community when requested by the Teacher(s), either with the Teacher(s) or independently.

Maintain records and files as directed.

Performs other job related duties of comparable importance, difficulty and responsibility as required.

Required Qualifications

Degree in Child and Youth Care, Social Work or Psychology from UBC or equivalent and two (2) or more years of successful full-time experience or equivalent part-time experience, working with adolescents or youth providing services of the type described previously in a school or community setting.

Demonstrated working knowledge of social, emotional and behavioural issues of adolescents.

Demonstrated ability in working with “at risk” adolescents.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively with community agencies and Ministries.

Demonstrated ability to independently plan and implement social, emotional and behavioural support plans for adolescents of secondary age, including instruction of students in areas such as conflict resolution, anger management and interpersonal skills.

Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain rapport with students of secondary age who exhibit social/emotional needs and/or severe behavioural difficulties including understanding the communicative functions of challenging behaviour.

Demonstrated ability to prevent and resolve conflicts between students in a constructive manner.

Thorough knowledge of District policy and legislation regarding conduct, confidentiality and the duty to report when working with adolescents.

Excellent interpersonal skills, including demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a member of a multi-functional program team with teachers, administrators, and community care providers.

Excellent ability to communicate orally and in writing.

Ability to organize workload and complete assigned tasks with mínimal supervision.

Familiarity with secondary curriculum.
