Job Summary
The Legal & Risk Specialist position will provide confidential support to the Legal, Privacy, & Risk Office, including: integrated risk management, contracts review & management, policy and procedure updates, risk consultations and claims management, and new hire training, as needed.

**Qualifications**:

- Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field (e.g. Law/Paralegal or Health and/or Business Administration) and/or Paralegal or Law Clerk diploma;
- Paralegal license preferred;
- Certification in Risk Management and/or Privacy (e.g. CRM, IAPP, CIPP, etc.) is considered an asset;
- Experience in a legal, risk, or healthcare setting is preferred;
- Familiarity with broader public sector organizations, and public hospitals in particular, and applicable legislation and directives will be considered an asset, as well as the ability to demonstrate legal terminology, language and vocabulary;
- Knowledge of contract administration standards and contract drafting and analysis;
- Experience with information privacy related matters including conducting privacy impact assessments is considered an asset;
- Experience with insurances and claims management;
- High level administrative skills;
- Customer service, conflict resolution, professional communication skills;
- Critical thinking and problem solving;
- Research skills;
- Project management skills;
- Working independently with mínimal supervision within a dynamic team, where problem-solving ability and enthusiasm;
- Experience working on special projects and be flexible in dealing with changing tasks

Primary Responsibilities
- Communicate with internal business partners regarding the risks presented by contract terms and provide strategies to mitigate risks.
- Support administration of Southlake’s contract management and filing system;
- Assist with determining the necessity of contracts and protect the Hospital’s intellectual property (if any);
- Use a wide range of legal or specialized knowledge to provide legal support services in an efficient and timely manner;
- Exercise good judgment, and use initiative and discretion in accomplishing routine assignments with mínimal supervision;
- Research legal issues, and engage in fact-gathering and fact-checking to support all assigned legal matters; Assist Business Unit or Legal Counsel with drafting, reviewing, maintaining and communicating corporate/compliance policies and procedures as needed;
- Consult on matters requiring the review of healthcare legislation
- Liaise with internal and external legal counsel on a variety of matters
- Must have the ability to read, analyze and interpret legal documents and to effectively present information to business partners and management
- Oversee the processing of insurance claims to ensure the procedure is handled efficiently, accurately, and in a manner that protects the interests of the hospital;
- Leads the Hospital’s professional liability and personal injury claims; leads investigations of claims with adjuster and legal counsel; represents hospital at Examinations for Discovery; supports and guides staff defendants, their managers and others through the legal process
- Implement and/or maintain various policies and procedures for claims;
- Engage in fact-finding and collection of evidence pertaining to claim support
- Overall support the Integrated Risk Management program (ie. annual IRM refresh / Risk Assessment Checklist (RAC) reporting / updating IRM reports for Board)
- Responds daily to organization-wide risk requests to provide expert
