Position Purpose:
Reporting to the Associate Director, Payroll and Hrinfo, ensures and validates payroll system data quality through targeted report analysis. Analyzes and recommends improvements to payroll processes for greater efficiency and fewer errors. Advises faculty and service administrative officers on best payroll audit practices.Examines returned cheques and stop payments and issues replacement cheques as necessary. Plans and controls operations related to bank withdrawals by employees on unpaid leave and ensures accuracy of preauthorized debits. Prepares all required remittances (government, unions, benefits) after deductions at source, meeting strict deadlines.

In this role, your responsibilities will include:

- Applies established verification methods to ensure the accuracy and integrity of payroll system data, including gross pay and all other components, such as deductions, benefits and leave. Uses appropriate sampling methods to catch errors.
- Prepares and analyzes reports that indicate the level of data accuracy and of compliance with internal controls and procedures.
- Checks reports compiled during payroll processing to detect and correct errors before payroll is deposited.
- Analyzes requests for garnishment to ensure that they are valid. Calculates the amount to garnish per pay. Checks calculations for every change in salary. Ensures that deductions are stopped when totals are reached.
- Prepares deposits of employee pay deductions intended for various organizations in accordance with strict deadlines. Ensures that the requisite information is submitted with every payment. Prepares billing for secondments.
- Coordinates and manages automatic withdrawals for employees on unpaid leave who wish to keep their benefits and contribute to their pension. Provides information on the corrective action needed to comply with University policies for various types of leave. Advises various stakeholders to ensure that preauthorized debits are correct.

What you will bring:

- College diploma in administration or finance or equivalent payroll-related experience
- Canadian Payroll Association (CPA) accreditation (an asset)
- In-depth knowledge of data system structures and data validation
- Knowledge of statistics, audit sampling and large-scale data retrieval and manipulation
- Knowledge of an integrated computer payroll system and of related systems, such as financial or IT systems in general
- Knowledge of federal and provincial statutes, labour standards and all matters related to payroll regulation
- Five years’ experience working with a complex payroll in a large, preferably unionized, organization
- Superior spreadsheet manipulation and analysis skills
- Ability to critically analyze systems and processes
- Initiative, creativity and organizational skills
- Communication skills
- Ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines
- Bilingualism — English/French (spoken and written)
