**Position Overview**
Under the direction of the Director of the Manager of Indigenous Fisheries, the **Resource Management Officer Technician (RMOT) Coordinator's** primary responsibility is to monitor fisheries and fish habitat. The **Resource Management Officer Technician Coordinator** may occasionally be required to work evenings, early mornings and weekends to accommodate activities such as meetings, program delivery, field work or representing CMM at public events. The **Resource Management Officer Technician Coordinator Reports **to reports to CMM's Department Directors.

The RMOT-Coordinator will focus on increasing capacity for lobster fishery observation, collecting information on lobster fishing activities, and lobster among participating mainland Mi'kmaq communities in mainland Nova Scotia. Lobster is known as Jakej in Mi'kmaq. Lobster fisheries are an important Aboriginal fishery that takes place throughout coastal Nova Scotia in regions corresponding to Maritimes and Gulf region Lobster fishing areas. The RMOT-Coordinator will divide their time equally between coordination and field activities. Coordination activities will include creating a network of Mi'kmaw communities interested in Aboriginal lobster fishery monitoring, quarterly meetings with interested RMOTS, organizing training sessions in marine safety, lobster handling, lobster sampling, bycatch monitoring data entry and so on.

The RMOT-Coordinator will also focus on coordinating salmon fishery observation, salmon monitoring, and salmon habitat assessment in the mainland Nova Scotia area. Because salmon are a species at risk in the Inner Bay of Fundy, extensive outreach and education will be done on the status of salmon. Mi'kmaw communities have identified a need to have education about salmon identification and community harvesting plans.

**Overview of Responsibilities**:

- The RMOT-Coordinator will bring together the RMOTs from the mainland Nova Scotia region by creating group communication pathways, gathering contact info, coordinating meetings, sharing resources such as equipment and methods, and coordinating training and field activity needs. Once the network is established and they can meet to determine and prioritize training needs and work together on training days, and ideal locations (internal versus field, the network could help).
- The RMOT-Coordinator will organize training based on the needs of the RMOTs, such as: SVOP, First Aid, Swift water, non-confrontational intervention, wildlife encounters, ATV training, snowmobile training, ice safety, boat safety, swift water training, eDNA, Electro Fishing. The Salmon RMOT-Coordinator will seek additional funding to provide the and work with CMM to ID in kind training opportunities.
- The RMOT-Coordinator will assist the AAROM team in developing standard monitoring protocols and achieving third party certification in monitoring.
- Field activities will include: dockside monitoring, onboard monitoring as a lobster technician, field outreach with harvesters including help with harvester cards and logs, and coordinating field activities for many RMOTs.
- The RMOT will take on the education and outreach component of a regional salmon management plan and educate where and how to fish for salmon within the plan.
- The RMOT-Coordinator will work with harvesters throughout the Winter, through outreach workshops, and coordinate activities related to Mi'kmaw ecological knowledge (MEK) and Mi'kmaq knowledge systems (MEKS) about salmon and salmon habitat.

**Position Requirements**:

- Knowledge and experience of Mi'kmaw communities in mainland Nova Scotia is a requirement
- Knowledge and experience of commercial fisheries, especially lobster fisheries is an asset
- Knowledge and experience of food fisheries and/or traditional fisheries is an asset
- Ability to do physically demanding work in various field conditions, in and around water, during inclement weather and aboard fishing vessels is a requirement
- Ability and willingness to travel often to nine Mi'kmaw communities requirement
- Possession of a NS Drivers License is a requirement
- Related education, work experience, personal activities and/or hobbies are an asset
