Position purpose:
Assesses problems related to Faculty physical spaces and facilities, and makes independent recommendations for solutions and improvements, to ensure ongoing teaching and research by prioritizing daily operations. Ensures ongoing operation of complex building infrastructure and sophisticated equipment to minimize impact on staff, buildings and equipment in situations continually under review.
- In this role, your responsibilities will include:
- Assesses feasibility and handles planning for laboratories, spaces and equipment in collaboration with researchers, the facility manager and the risk, health and safety manager. Submits plans for approval and requests cost estimates, ensuring that the necessary services are in place.
- Analyzes problem areas, recommends solutions or improvements, assists support staff and supervises contractors, while setting up and maintaining safe, operational work areas. Anticipates problems by performing daily checks of Faculty physical spaces.
- Studies repair requests to identify recurring problems and find viable, long-term solutions to problems. Implements corrective action to repair deficiencies in teaching, public and administrative spaces, and sophisticated research labs.
- Acts as a resource for support staff, students and researchers for problems related to the building or to space planning. Ensures facilities, equipment and the work environment are safe, operational and fit for the Faculty’s teaching, research and support mandate. Ensures that corrective action is initiated and implemented as requested. Serves as a liaison between external contractors, internal University services and Faculty support staff.
- Evaluates and prioritizes daily operations required by researchers, support staff and students. Ensures that physical spaces and equipment are safe and compliant with University standards and policies.
- Manages, creates and follows up on service requests with the Facilities unit regarding repairs. Coordinates service interruptions (electricity, water, ventilation, etc.) affecting Faculty buildings. Supervises the transportation team during Faculty moves. Performs health inspections and follows up with the Recycling & Sanitary Services.
- What you will bring:
- College diploma in a relevant field (architecture, building science or civil, mechanical or electrical engineering technology) or five years’ equivalent experience
- Two years’ experience in building management, ideally in an educational or research setting
- Knowledge of mechanics and building maintenance systems, including those related to research laboratories (HVAC, controls, service distribution, chemical fume hoods, biosafety cabinets, mechanical and electrical systems)
- Knowledge of construction trades, electrical and mechanical systems, and architectural and engineering drawings
- Knowledge of small renovation or moving project management
- Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act as it relates to construction and the use of tools (screwdrivers, mallets, etc.)
- Basic knowledge of the Ontario Building Code and environmental standards
- Practical experience with advanced use of Microsoft 365 products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams and Access), Windows, the internet and Autocad (2014 version or later)
- Ability to handle competing priorities and meet deadlines
- Communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills
- Ability to exercise a high level of expertise under tight deadlines and provide concise instruction under difficult conditions
- Strong knowledge of internal university organization with ability to negotiate and balance needs of a wide variety of groups and interests
- Bilingualism — English/French (spoken and written)
