The Film Animation program at the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema welcomes and trains trans-disciplinary artist-researchers who are redefining the future of cinema. Located in Montreal, home of the National Film Board of Canada, and connected to a diverse range of cinematic and artistic communities, the program enjoys a long-standing reputation as one of Canada’s foremost environment for the study and creation of auteur animation. Our Film Animation students graduate with a solid foundation in the art of frame-by-frame filmmaking from professor-practitioners connected to a community of working animators in Montreal and around the world. They go on to produce their own films, experimenting with a variety of animation techniques and materials, and develop highly personal approaches to the filmmaking process, while many pursue graduate studies in animation research-creation and related fields.

Our Film Animation faculty provide students with intensive training in a diverse range of traditional and digital animation techniques, including stop motion, classical animation, under camera, experimental animation, animated documentary, sound for animation, and others. This rigorous approach to classical and digital animation processes emphasizes cross-pollination and artistic experimentation, making Film Animation one of the most versatile non-commercial training programs in its field. With one Oscar win, ten Academy Award nominations, thousands of prestigious festival screenings at Cannes, Annecy, Fantoche, HotDocs, DOK Leipzig, and hundreds of international awards (Emmys, Golden Dove, Prix Iris), past and present Film Animation faculty and students enjoy global acclaim for their role as directors, producers, editors, and designers alike.
