**Department summary**

The Electrical Utilities group is responsible for the safe and reliable operation of the 15kV network in the Greater Campus Area (GCA), South Campus, Devon, Kinsella, Camrose and other University properties within the Province of Alberta. The Greater Campus Area includes U of A Hospital, Cross Cancer Institute, Canadian Blood Services, and the Jubilee Auditorium. In addition, Electrical Utilities provide electrical services to other utility departments to operate and maintain the Heating Plant, Cooling Plant(s), associated equipment and their distribution networks (corridor).

**Position summary**

The Electrical Utilities Foreman assists the Electrical Utilities Supervisor in assigning and coordinating the daily activities of the crew including instructing the crew in the operation and maintenance of new facilities and equipment; surveying and assessing changes required to install new equipment into the electrical utilities distribution system; studying the functions of new microprocessor based relays and control equipment to ensure failsafe operation. The Foreman is responsible for safe work practices, materials acquisitions, efficient use of resources, coordination of work with others (e.g contractors), evaluating and decision making on equipment condition, cost control, off-campus power systems and contract work.

**Duties**
- Responds immediately to problems in the Utilities electrical distribution system on a 24-hour basis;
- Organizes and implements maintenance schedules;
- Prepares switching orders and safety clearances for high voltage equipment.
- Operates computer based Utility Control & Monitoring System to ensure proper functioning of the electrical distribution system;
- Supervises the work of contractors by visiting work sites and inspecting work for conformance with specifications, drawings and code requirements to ensure the contract is completed safely and in working order;
- Instructs and trains workers in safety procedures;
- Reviews completed electrical isolation certificate and switching orders to ensure compliance of the procedures.
- Advises, constructs, and leads the testing of the interface between the utilities distributed control system and the elecrical distribution system.
- Prepares daily operating reports such as absence reporting and staff time sheets;
- Maintains an inventory of equipment and material;
**Minimum Qualifications**
- Grade 12;
- Journeyman Electrician;
- 5 year upgrade to Power Electrician training, or equivalent, in operation of test equipment and data interpretation; and
- Extensive experieince of high voltage distribution system, generating systems, computer systems, and complex control systems.

**Preferred Qualifications**
- Computer based monitoring and control;
- Supervision courses and communication skills;
- First Aid, CPR, confined space entry, forklift, WHMIS, spill response;
- Study and familiarization with the operation and maintenance of generation facilities and microprocessor based equipment; and
- Advanced communication training such as Managing Conflict, Having Difficult Conversations, Clear & Consise writing skills.
