Assistant Supervisor, Early Years Programs

**Summary**:

Reporting to the Senior Supervisor, Early Years and Community Programs, the Assistant Supervisor, Early Years Programs is responsible for:
**Primary Responsibilities**:
Classroom Responsibilities
- Support in the development and implementation of early learning programs for children ranging from 0 - 6 years of age.
- Follow and support the implementation of an emergent curriculum incorporating ELECT framework and Aboriginal frameworks.
- Support and mentor the development and maintenance of a consistent schedule which includes small and large group experiences, choice time, music and movement, large and small motor activities, skill development, meals, and effective transitions between activities.
- Encourage experimentation, exploration, problem solving, cooperation, socialization, and choice-making; ask open-ended questions and follow-up questions to promote further learning and thinking.
- Support in the design and implementation of programs that are culture-based and consistent with internal and external program standards, policies, and related funder guidelines.

Leadership Responsibilities
- Assisting the collective Early Years leadership team with the day-to-day functions and program oversight of the programs.
- Ensuring, maintaining, and observing the overall safety of all children within the program.
- Alternating on-call schedule with Supervisors for scheduling of on call support staff.
- Assisting with reporting for financial and human resources purposes.
- Enforcing and complying with established policies, procedures, and programs and, in consultation with Supervisor, developing new policies and procedures as needed.
- Supporting in the onboarding and training of new team members.
- Support in the design and implementation of programs that are culture-based and consistent with internal and external program standards, policies, and related funder guidelines.
- Supervising, mentoring, and coaching assigned students throughout the year as part of their student placements.

Individualization, Curriculum and Assessment
- Follow agency-adopted curricula, using effective strategies to guide learning.
- Prepare the classroom environment and materials to support developmentally appropriate curriculum plans and learning experiences.
- Assess individual and group needs, attending to specific interests, strengths, and concerns.
- Work with appropriate supports to develop specialized planning for children and families as needed.
- Coordinate with support staff when indicated, developing a collaborative approach that benefits all children in the classroom.
- Adapt curriculum to address and meet individual goals for children as required.
- Develop and utilize integrated curriculum plans which reflect mandated elements and components, familial and cultural influences, and promote the social, emotional, physical and cognitive development of Aboriginal Head Start children.
- Participate in integrated service meetings to plan for and delivery collaborative services across all components.

Documentation
- Utilize agency adopted tools for ongoing assessment and documentation.
- Ensure all required documentation is completed accurately and in accordance with legislation and ministry requirements.

Additional Job Responsibilities
- Work with other staff to ensure general maintenance and security of facility.
- Assist with inventory of equipment and supplies.
- Responsible for program licenses and participating in the licensing processes and reviews.
- Other duties as requested.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

- Significant decision and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work as a team member collaborating with staff, families and community resources.
- Ability to maintain respectful relations and communication with staff, families, children and community.
- Ability to respond to events happening at all times in classroom, outdoor play areas and on field trips, including school bus. This includes the physical ability to move quickly in order to respond to children who are very active and may need redirection or restraint in order to ensure their safety or the safety of others in the environment.
- Ability to interact with children at their eye level, ie. sitting, kneeling, stooping, bending.
- Lifting up to 50 lbs.
