Summary: The Collections Assistant will report directly to the Historic Collections Officer. They will work to improve our collections documentation and storage. They will assist with cataloguing collections, updating our database, research, photographing and condition reporting our collections and repacking collection items.

What it’s like to work here: Homer Watson House and Gallery is the oldest operating art gallery in Ontario and one of the oldest galleries in Canada. Our mission is to preserve and celebrate the legacy of Homer Watson’s creative spirit by stimulating the appreciation, enjoyment and practice of the visual arts.

**Our mandate is to engage in three-part program of**:

- Preservation and Collection of Homer Watson’s art, his home studio and gallery and the heritage of his life, his times and that of Phoebe Watson and the Doon School of Fine Arts.
- Exhibition of Homer Watson’s body of work and regular shows of contemporary local and regional artists.
- Education and enrichment through events and instructional programs in the visual arts.

**What you'll be doing**

As an operating museum and art gallery we have a collection of historic art pieces, artifacts and archive materials. We are currently working to better document and care for these collections. As the Collections Assistant, you will be involved with the documentation and care of the historic collection.

Tasks will include the following:
1. Cataloguing our reference library in Past Perfect

2. Handling fragile museum collections including works on paper and paintings.

3. Assisting with photographing historic collections

4. Cataloguing and re-housing archival materials

5. Updating collections database

6. Collections Monitoring
- recording damage or areas of concern on historic collections on a digital condition report

7. Research
- historic research to update collections database

**To be fantastic in this role you**:

- Are comfortable working as part of a team
- Have experience working with fragile historic collections
- Have a good understanding of HWHG and what we do
- Are willing to learn new skills
- Have experience working in heritage or museums
- Are competent with computers and databases (experience with Past Perfect Collections Management System is an asset)
- Are available to work a flexible schedule including regular weekends
- Have proven research skills
- Have a strong attention to detail

This position is funded by Young Canada Works therefore, all applicants must meet the following requirements to be eligible:

- be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada; _Note: Non-Canadian students or graduates holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible._
- be legally entitled to work in Canada;
- be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
- meet the specific eligibility criteria of the program to which you apply;
- be willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment; and
- not have another full-time job during the YCW work assignment.
- Students in an YCW employment program must also:

- have registered as a high school, college, CEGEP or university student (as defined by their educational institution) in the semester preceding the YCW work assignment; and
- intend to return to studies during or after the YCW work assignment

**Job Type**: Fixed term contract
Contract length: 3 months

**Salary**: From $17.00 per hour

- Weekend availability

- Kitchener, ON N2P 1H8: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required)
