Under Article 13 of the Collective Agreement between the Nova Scotia Department of Public Works and the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 1867, the following opportunity is being posted.
**About Us**:
At the Department of Public Works, we are responsible for building and maintaining a sustainable provincial infrastructure for Nova Scotians. From highways and bridges to government buildings and registration of vehicles, safety and quality of life are top of mind. We support Nova Scotia’s 23,000 kilometers of roads and highways, 4,100 bridges, and 9 provincial ferries.
Our Fleet Services Division is pivotal in ensuring Public Works Fleet is running smoothly, ensuring the safety of our provincial road network.
**About Our Opportunity**:
The Mechanical Maintenance Worker is responsible for carrying out the daily operation and maintenance of the building infrastructure at the Miller Lake Facility. This includes all buildings within the Miller Lake compound as well as the pump house located on the shores of Miller Lake directly north of the compound. The incumbent is responsible for monitoring the compound’s mechanical, electrical, water, sewage, ventilation, and heating systems to ensure they perform and operate efficiently to provide a proper work environment for the compound’s tenants. The incumbent will carry out all janitorial duties, basic lawn care, minor carpentry, mechanical and electrical repairs, monitor contractors, administer service contracts and snow and ice control.
**Qualifications and Experience**:
You have Grade 10 plus two (2) years of related experience in the operation of commercial or institutional buildings. General knowledge of all aspects of building construction and operation including architectural, plumbing, electrical, fire suppression, HVAC systems and sewage treatment is required.
You must have a thorough knowledge of/experience with operating lawn tractors, cleaning equipment, supplies and current janitorial practices.
Must have computer skills and be able to keep and maintain electronic records.
You also have good planning and organizational skills, and strong public relations skills client-focused, initiative and positive attitude are required.
Good verbal and written communications skills and the ability to write clear, concise correspondence are required and must be able to work both independently and as part of a team.

You must also be able to work at heights and operate a man lift.
Driver’s license with air brake endorsement is considered an asset.
The following will be considered assets:
- Power Engineer designation, facilities Maintenance Mechanic Certificate or vocational training in the plumbing or electrical field;
- Level 1 certification as a Wastewater Treatment Operator as recognized by the Nova Scotia Department of Environment;
- Familiarity with the National Building Code and the National Fire Code;
- Familiarity with the Occupational Safety General Regulations, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Departmental Health Safety and Environment Program, Policies and Procedures.
You must possess the ability to read and interpret drawings and specifications, along with basic computer skills and the ability to keep and maintain electronic records.

**Working Conditions**:
Work is performed in a mechanical repair environment occasioned by noise, smoke and gas fumes and at times adverse weather conditions while operating in a field environment. Considerable standing, lifting, carrying and moving about is a requirement of this position.
**Additional Information**:
There are three (3) opportunities based out of Miller Lake.
This opportunity is for a 52-week Year-Round position - the duties of which are full time and continuous in nature.
Normal hours of work are 8am - 4:30pm. If equipment breaks down, we will count on you to help things get up and running again. Therefore, you will be on-call periodically outside of your regular work schedule.
Overtime and some travel are required.
We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.
