The Fleet Services Division of the Department of Public Works supports the backbone of our provincial highway infrastructure. We are located at Miller Lake, the central Fleet Services hub of the province. At Miller Lake, we are pivotal in ensuring the equipment used to maintain, repair, and build Nova Scotia’s 23,000 kilometers of roads and highways, and 4,100 bridges, is always ready to go.

**About Our Opportunity**:
The Mechanical Maintenance Worker I is responsible for the efficient operation of a tractor/trailer (float) to transport heavy equipment, parts, and materials across the province.
**Primary Accountabilities**:
As the Mechanical Maintenance Worker, your role is primarily responsible for:
- Operates tractor/trailer unit to perform required duties in a safe and efficient manner.
- Loads and unloads equipment/materials/parts on and off trailer. Ensures loads are properly
- secured prior to transport.
- Ensure tractor/trailer is parked in a safe manner, prior to loading and unloading.
- Performs procedures as required under the pre-trip inspections and preventative maintenance
- program. Completes logbook and mandatory preventative maintenance reports, including
- checking and filling all fluid levels, greasing of machine, maintaining overall cleanliness for the
- interior of the machine, checking for permits, licenses, and registrations.
- Washes truck when necessary.
- Also inspects chains, binds and load securement for certification.
- Wears proper personal protective equipment, as required.
- Operates jib loader and yard crane to move/place equipment and/or parts throughout the
- compound to keep the yard organized and maintained.
- Operates snow removal equipment, when required. Shovels walkways and spreads salt.
- Performs light maintenance duties.
- Performs any other miscellaneous duties as directed by immediate supervisor.
**Qualifications and Experience**:
Some high school and two (2) years’ experience or an acceptable equivalent years of education and experience in operating equipment as well as hauling different trailers and loading/tying down various pieces of equipment.
A minimum of a Class I license with air brake endorsement is required.
Training completed at any accredited heavy/commercial equipment training institute, knowledge of hydraulic systems, mechanical aptitude and ability, would be considered an asset.
Good writing skills required to complete department forms. Good communication and customer service skills to deal with staff in various bases.
Knowledge of hydraulic systems and a mechanical aptitude are considered assets. Previous experience operating trucks with salt and plow equipment, a Class I license, and knowledge of salt spreading systems are also considered assets. As you will be required to complete daily logs and inspection reports, both reading and writing comprehension is necessary.

**Working Conditions**:
You will be working in all types of weather conditions, environmental hazards, traffic conditions, occasional work performed in a mechanical environment occasioned by smoke and fumes. Expected to work in above normal noise, dust and vibrations.
**Additional Information**:
This opportunity is for a 52-week Year-Round position - the duties of which are full time and continuous in nature.
There is one (1) opportunity and most of your work will be located at Miller Lake, but you will be required to travel and work in other mechanic shops throughout the province as required.
