**Position Summary**:
The Director Behaviour & Animal Care is responsible for developing strategies, plans and
establishing measurable outcomes as it relates to the mental and behavioural welfare of the
animals under WHS care; as well as guiding the research, development and delivery of animal
behaviour training classes, workshops and community outreach aimed at keeping pets in their
homes and out of the animal shelter. This role is also responsible for ensuring the highest level of
care to shelter animals is adhered to by the Animal Care staff. Reporting to the Chief Operations
Officer, the Director Behaviour & Animal Care works with other departments to identify and procure
contacts and resources for successful development and implementation of said programs.***

RESPONSIBILITIES SPECIFIC TO THE JOB LEVEL
- Participate in goal setting for the Department and staff, and consistently monitor and report on
performance.
- Lead planning to best develop and organize staff to meet priorities and objectives, focusing on
ways to best leverage the strength of existing team members.
- Take responsibility to ensure training plans are developed and play a strong role to support
training and staff development. Delegate direct staff supervision to managers where
appropriate.
- Consult with the supervisor on performance-related issues to confirm corrective action. Lead
corrective action in consultation with supervisor and human resources specialist.
- Support the planning, coordination, and management of Department operations in alignment
with the WHS and departmental strategy and priorities, per established policies.
- Provide input into the development of policies and practices. Lead the implementation of and
support evaluation of operational processes and procedures, following relevant standards.
- Understand and lead the implementation of best practices.
- Monitor, complete and provide regular reports and budget as needed.
- Support research and business development by providing input and directly supporting
emerging or existing initiatives.
- As delegated, assume responsibility over and directly manage business development activities
or initiatives per established plan.
- Monitor and report on outcomes of business development activities.
RESPONSIBILITIES SPECIFIC TO THE ROLE
**Behaviour**
- Develop and implements training classes, protocols, and programs for community pets.
- Along with the Manger Behaviour & Animal Care, review and make recommendations for
animals surrendered with a severe aggressive behaviour history.
- Advocate for respectful consideration and least averse/stress handling for all animals in our
care.
- Review periodically the behaviour protocols and procedures to assure we are implementing
best practice in consideration of task force recommendations.
- In. conjunction with the Manager Behaviour & Animal Care, work directly with more challenging
behaviour cases.
- Assist in the promotion of animals and behaviour information on social media and other
communication outlets.
- Initiate and support respectful relationships with community partners, other agencies and
rescues, work to promote the mission, goals, and objectives of the WHS.
- Attend to elevated calls/clients.
**Animal Care**
- Design and implement operational programs and policies related to optimal animal care.
- Support Manager Behaviour & Animal Care in coaching and mentorship for the Animal Care
staff.
- Support the Manager Behaviour & Animal Care in developing monitoring and evaluation
measures to review humane care of all shelter animals at all times.
- Support Manager Behaviour & Animal Care in the ordering of all animal care materials (i.e. food,
litters, cleaning supplies, etc.)
