**LOCATION**
Located approximately 100 kilometres east of Toronto, NHH is a vibrant community hospital delivering a broad range of acute, post-acute, outpatient and diagnostic services. Directly serving a growing population of more than 60,000 residents spread across a mix of urban and rural settings, NHH directly employs approximately 750 people and relies on the additional support provided by a highly engaged and supportive network of physicians, midwives and volunteers.
**ROLE OVERVIEW**
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Chief of Staff (COS) works collaboratively with the President and CEO and the Senior Leadership Team to support NHH’s shared purpose of “People First” and core values of Integrity, Quality, Respect, Teamwork, Compassion. The COS engages physicians as key interest holders in achieving NHH’s strategic goals and priorities. As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, the COS participates in the strategic planning, inspiration, motivation, and leadership required to achieve the strategic priorities of NHH while fostering effective relationships amongst the staff, physicians and Midwife groups.
The COS is accountable and responsible for the organization and oversight of the medical quality of care within NHH on behalf of the Board of Directors. The Chief of Staff serves as the Chair, Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) and is an ex-officio member of the Board of Directors and sits on selected Committees. The COS provides leadership and direction, and develops and supports teamwork and personal/professional growth with all NHH groups. The COS leads physician human resource planning while promoting equity, diversity inclusion, quality and work-life balance in the work environment. In addition, the COS engages in networking activities/events with the OHA, CPSO and other regulatory bodies, professional groups, regional health care partners and other external agencies as an ambassador for NHH. While some duties are prescribed by legislation and defined within the Professional Staff By-Laws, the basic accountabilities for these roles are defined within the role information.
**SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE**
- Leadership experience
- Track record of experience in implementation of organizational change
- Medical licensure or eligibility for licensure with the CPSO
- Ability to motivate and inspire others
- Capability to act as a mentor and coach
- Acumen to exercise sound judgment in relation to complex issues in the health system environments
- Credentialing experience
- Demonstrated experience and ability to coach
- Ability to manage difficult conversations and situations
- Technologically savvy
**WHY THIS ROLE IS ATTRACTIVE**
In this position, the COS will be able to fulfill their leadership/administrative functions in two to three days/week with the remainder of their time available to maintain their clinical practice.
**LEADERSHIP EXPECTATIONS**
While the principal responsibilities for the COS relate to leadership for the Professional Staff, the COS also plays a pivotal role in working with the broad leadership team and with clinical providers to ensure the delivery of high-quality, high-reliability medical care to patients served by NHH.
The COS must support the goals of the organization and act as a role model for organizational values that emphasize teamwork and respect for others within an integrated, inclusive approach to the delivery of care.
Although addressing issues related to risk-management is an important function, the COS must champion excellence in patient care more broadly by ensuring that the Medical Advisory Committee and the Professional Staff continually enhance the efficacy and efficiency of patient care. While part of this role includes guiding the ongoing development of the NHH Professional Staff, the COS has a central role to play in the development of a culture of physician leadership, collegiality and accountability within NHH. This is a key function for preparing NHH to address future needs, opportunities, and challenges.
