**INTRO**
The Radiological Technical Specialist would work closely with operational Health Physics to reduce exposures to ionizing radiation and prevent the spread of radioactive contamination. The operational Health Physicist will consult the Radiological Technical Specialist as to when engineered controls are required for work, and the Radiological Technical Specialist will develop (in conjunction with required support groups) appropriate controls and specify the installation, testing and maintenance requirements. A large part of the role will be to use their expertise to achieve the next level of contamination control at the source through the design, development, and use of engineered containments. The goal for this role would be to eliminate open contamination/PPE work areas and reduce contamination events. This position would provide improvements in planning and execution of and radioactive work activities

**DUTIES**
- The Radiological Technical Specialist would work with engineers, workers performing the work activities, and RP staff to implement radiological requirements/best practices and prevent/minimize radiation exposures and the spread of contamination.
- Review, revise and update radiological control standards associated with radiological work activities. HPs inform radiological technical specialists of the ALARA Cost benefit analysis associated with recommended engineering controls.
- Assist in developing lessons learned from radiological engineering controls for high hazardous radiological work.
- Assist in developing new technologies associated with radiological controls.
- Provide expertise in in developing ventilation contamination controls for tents, TVEs, glove bags, and other containments.
- For work in high radiation fields, collaborate with work teams and HPs to develop tooling methods to reduce extremity and whole-body radiation exposures. Collaborate with work teams and HPs on activity specific training if needed.
- Assist the work team in preparing work procedure that include developing steps that prevent/minimize radiation exposures and limit the spread of contamination.
- When non-radiological hazards are present for radioactive work activities, assist the work team in establishing radiological controls that integrate with controls for other hazards (e.g., hot work, chemicals, and work at heights).
- To reduce the use of open contamination areas requiring PPE for entry, assist in developing engineered controls at the source and associated work procedures. This role includes:Assist in developing Radiological Engineering techniques (e.g., containment tents, TVEs, fume hoods, tooling, containments, shielding).

Assist in developing training, maintenance, testing, and inspections as appropriate.
Establish maximum contamination levels for the engineered controls that are applied.
- For work activities with high radiation and/or contamination levels, assist in preparing radiological training and mock-ups for use of engineered containments, including negative ventilation.
- For work activities performed in fume hoods, set maximum contamination levels, specify necessary ventilation flow rates, set maximum sash levels for work operations, and set expectations for contamination surveys and their use by workers.
- During work activity planning and execution, promptly report and document any technical/radiological issues and facilitate effective resolution.
- Provide peer review support as needed for Health Physicists.

**QUALIFICATIONS**
Education
- At minimum, a Bachelors (Honours) degree in Engineering from a university of recognized standing; or membership in an engineering or scientific professional organization authorized by statute to establish qualification for membership in that organization

Experience
- Minimum 4 years’ engineering experience working at a nuclear facility

Abilities and Skills
- Work within established work control programs to determine and assist in implementation of engineering controls in radiological work. Work with trades persons to improve controls as needed.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment in technical matters, to routinely solve technical problems and to make independent decisions.
- Excellent oral and written English communication skills; previous experience making technical presentations to small and large audiences.
- This position will require good organization skills and patience

Job/Industry Specific Knowledge
- Working knowledge of radiological hazards and controls.
- Understanding of industry practice with respect to mitigation of radiological hazards. Additional radiological training will be provided.
- Knowledge of Engineering practices, Engineering Change Control and Configuration Management.
- Knowledge of CRL RP practices.

Location of Work
- On-SiteThis role is based out of CNL’s Chalk River, which will be the designated workplace. CNL may require travel from time to time, as necessary.
