The Adventure Earth programs engage children, youth and families in nature-based experiential programs in environmental/earth education, youth leadership, and outdoor recreation. As part of the Halifax Municipality’s Parks and Recreation services, the Adventure Earth programs work toward building a healthy and sustainable future for our children and youth, our communities, and the Earth.

Successful applicants may be working an overnight camp programming at Camp Mockingee which is located in Upper Vaughn NS. The camps offered during the Summer of 2025 include Explorers (offered twice) minicamp for 7-9 years old and the youth leadership overnight camp called L.E.A.D. After that, they will support day camp programming and oversee a two-week paddling program at Graham Gove in Dartmouth.

**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Attend all required training sessions
- Deliver camp story-based programming during the week-long camps (Sun Ship or L.E.A.D specific programming) according to the program manuals, content, and delivery methods.
- Overseeing a camp crew during the day and night (supervising nightly bed preparations)
- Assist Camp Cooks at mealtime as needed
- Learn the principles of Earth Education, understanding and uphold HRM polices and procedures.
- Participate in check-ins and debriefs each day
- Establish and maintain group community standard, support other leaders by role modelling positive behaviours and use appropriate techniques of behaviour guidance
- Organize, manage and maintain equipment and supplies
- Ensure the safety and positive experience of participants, youth leaders and other staff at all times
- Support youth leaders in their development by assisting Coordinators with goal setting, supervision and mentorship, support, feedback, and evaluations. Assist with the completion of evaluations for each youth leader at the completion of programs
- Support persons with diverse needs and disabilities in programs (e.g. personal care, lifting procedures, adapting activities, developing individualized plans when needed, etc.)
- Maintaining the emotional and physical safety of a group of participants for week
- Staff with the appropriate certifications may be assigned to lifeguard participants on a beachfront, teach basic canoeing skills, and/or lead overnight canoe/camping trips

**QUALIFICATIONS**
**Education and Experience**:

- Must have current certification in Emergency First Aid (CSA Basic) including Level C CPR (valid through to August 29th, 2025)
- Must have at least one season/summer of experience working or volunteering with children
- Grade 10 or higher Studies in Outdoor Recreation, Environmental Education or similar courses is an asset

**Considered an Asset**
- Previous leadership experience with outdoor, overnight, environmental and/or earth education
- Understanding of Healthy Child Development
- Previous experience with the Adventure Earth Centre or St. Mary's Boat Club Programs
- Current National Lifeguard Services Certification
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License
- Canoeing/kayaking certification
- Previous experience working with persons with disabilities an asset
- Experience in youth leadership facilitation an asset.
- Advanced First Aid or Wilderness Remote First Aid

**Additional Conditions of Employment**
- Applicants must be willing to obtain WHMIS training
- Copies of required certifications must be submitted upon hire
- Staff are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from work sites, including those assigned to work overnight camps at Camp Mockingee
- Must be able to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions

**Security Clearance Requirements**:Applicants must complete screening through the Child Abuse Registry Check and a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search.

**Overnight Camp Programs**
Staff will be at the overnight camp location (Camp Mockingee, 160 Smeltzer Rd, Windsor) during the following dates:
May 23-25, 2025: Mockingee Staff Training
July 2-5, 2025: Program Set up & Staff Training
July 8-12, 2025: Explorers
July 15-19, 2025; Explorers
July 22-27, 2025: Training/L.E.A.D. Youth Leadership Camp
July 30-August 1, 2025: Mini Camp

**Note**: All meals are included while working overnight camps

**Canoe Camps**: During the following dates staff will be leading day camp canoeing programs at Lake Banook
August 11-15, 2025 and August 22, 2025.

**SALARY**: Non-Union; $18.20 per hour (plus 4% vacation pay) - Anticipated wage as of April 1st, 2025

**WORK LOCATION**: Adventure Earth Centre-Camp Mockingee (168 Smeltzer Road, Windsor).
