**Duties and Responsibilities**:

- Responsible for carrying out a diverse range of work activities in a fast-paced environment.
- Preparation of bacterial growth media, buffers and reagents, and stocking of lab consumables.
- Performing molecular cloning procedures such as PCR, qRT-PCR, Gibson Assembly, restriction-ligation cloning, electroporation, gel electrophoresis, nucleic acid purification, etc.
- Designing plasmids and DNA primers using bioinformatics software (e.g. SnapGene, Vector NTI, Benchling, etc.)
- Performing genome engineering of microbial strains using viral recombination proteins and CRISPR-based technologies.
- Operating and troubleshooting equipment including autoclaves, centrifuges, HPLC, GC, and lyophilizer.
- Aseptic handling of microbial cultures and related plating techniques.
- Stocking and cataloguing cryogenically stored microbial strains.
- Responsible for scheduled cleaning, maintenance, and calibration of laboratory equipment.
- Helping to reorganize laboratory space and setup new equipment.
- Assisting with inventory management.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
- Developing SOPs and protocols for laboratory equipment and analytical techniques, and training of new students and employees.
- In-depth knowledge of microbiology and/or fermentation is an asset.
- Experience with R and MATLAB is an asset.
- Other duties as assigned or required.

**Required Qualifications and Skills**:

- BSc (Biochemistry, Biology, Biotechnology) or BASc (Chemical, Environmental, Biological) degree plus a minimum of 24-months of relevant laboratory experience.
- Practical experience in aseptic handling of microbial or cell cultures, molecular biology, and chromatography.
- Experienced in cell and molecular biology techniques.
- Comfortable in working with routine laboratory equipment like centrifuges, balances, biosafety cabinets, autoclaves, PCR, electrophoresis system etc.
- Ability to work independently with minimum guidance and supervision.
- Ability to multitask and meet deadlines.
- Highly effective oral and written communication.
- Comply with health and safety guidelines, quality assurance policies and defined procedures.
- Comfortable with a fast-paced and self-directed work environment.
- Excellent knowledge of MS Office suite and willingness to learn new software.
