Job Summary

The UBC-Vancouver (UBC-V) School of Nursing is dedicated to ensuring its students and faculty are advancing equity and social justice so that it can make a difference, through leading-edge nursing education, research, and practice, within an exceptional learning and working environment. To achieve this vision, the School of Nursing has created an Indigenous Cultural Safety (ICS) committee with the goal to decolonize nursing education by fostering an environment of safety and humility for Indigenous students, faculty, and staff, and ultimately the health care system.

The Indigenous Nursing Lead (INL) will provide onsite support for Indigenous nursing students, and establish and maintain connection to Indigenous communities who are working with or will work with UBC-Vancouver School of Nursing. The INL-Students will manage recruitment/retention initiatives and clinical placements to ensure the success of Indigenous nursing students across the nursing programs. The INL-Students works to support culturally safe student experiences and to build a community for Indigenous nursing students in the school. The incumbent will develop recruitment and outreach strategies to engage Indigenous communities. The INL will also work closely with faculty across the School working together on pedagogy specific to teaching and mentoring Indigenous students and caring for Indigenous patients.

Bringing their vast knowledge of the healthcare system and nursing coupled with their lived experience the INL will be an integral role to help the School achieve its goals of decolonizing nursing education. The INL will also work closely with faculty across the School advising on pedagogy specific to teaching and mentoring Indigenous students and caring for Indigenous patients.

Organizational Status

Reports to the Associate Director, Graduate Programs. Works with faculty, staff, and students in the School, Indigenous-specific portfolios at UBC, and Indigenous communities.

We offer a full range of innovative programs, including intensive BSN, MN-NP, MSN and PhD programs.

Work Performed

The Indigenous Nursing Lead will be supervised by and reports directly to the Associate Director, Graduate Programs and is responsible for the following:

- Develop, Implement, and manage the recruitment of Indigenous students in UBC-V Nursing program.
- Provides Indigenous-centred mentoring, support and trauma-informed problem resolution support for Indigenous nursing students.
- Provides academic advising, mentorship, and counseling services tailored to the needs of Indigenous students.
- Provides advising to Indigenous students in clinical practice and career planning based on their experience as an Indigenous nurse.
- Advocates for policies and initiatives that support the recruitment, retention, and success of Indigenous nursing students.
- Identifies and negotiates with Indigenous Health Systems for creating nursing student placements and nursing practice collaborations.
- Oversee nursing placements for Indigenous students, including Indigenous Health Authority placements.
- Provides consultation, process design, facilitation, programming, and resource development services to the School of Nursing programs focused on Indigenous engagement and educational initiatives.
