- Job Description Summary
- A Floor Fellow in this profile is a McGill Student hired to ensure the quality of residence life and the well-being of students in Residences. Floor Fellows are role models, accessible resources and facilitators of the success of students’ residence life experience. The Floor Fellows are also students working to achieve their own academic and personal goals.
- Job Description
- Reporting to the Residence Life Manager of their community, Floor Fellows serve a live-in student leadership role integral to building a community of support and respect within residences. Floor Fellows assist with residents' academic and social transition into university life and support the wellbeing of residents. Floor Fellows are the primary peer resource for the residents in their community.
- Community Building / Programming- Develop and maintain connections with residents through planned social interactions-
- Fulfill monthly passive and active programming expectations that support the social and educational needs of students and align with the student life cycle and the Residence Life Programming model-
- Conduct a minimum of one floor meeting per term-
- Attend and support events organized by Residence Life Staff-
- Be visible, have a presence in the community, build community in assigned hall (e.g. dining hall, community spaces)- Peer Resource- Provide peer support and referrals for students facing personal, social or academic difficulties-
- Report all students of concern and disclosures of sexual violence to Residence Life Management, Local Wellness Advisors and appropriate McGill offices, such as OSVRSE-
- Conduct and document regular check-ins with residents each semester-
- Serve as an exemplary role model for residents. Especially in their academic life, interpersonal relationships, community involvement and online activities-
- Know, communicate, enforce and abide by existing Residence Hall, SHHS and McGill policies (e.g. Code of Community Living, Residence Handbook, McGill Student Code of Conduct)-
- Facilitate roommate/community conflict mediation meetings with assistance from the RLM as required-
- Maintain confidentiality as per the confidentiality agreement-
- Collaborate with Front Desk, facilities, Protection Patrollers, dining hall and other SHHS and McGill staff to ensure a high level of support and services to studentGeneral Availability and Duty- Serve as an accessible resource to students in residence-
- Building safety/emergency response, work with Protection Patrollers, ARLM, RLM, this could include fire alarms, maintenance issues, contacting 911-
- Respond and assist in the event of an emergency-
- Perform duty shifts, according to the schedule and conditions determined by the Residence Life Manager of their hall. Duty shifts are scheduled late evening/early morning hours-
- Duty conditions include but are not limited to: remain in assigned building for the duration of the shift; hold and respond to the duty phone, complete active rounds (number of rounds outlined by RLM based on building needs) as directed to engage with residents and to uphold the standards of behaviors in the community, assist students in distress, enforce quiet hours when in effect, report and mitigate safety hazards as necessary, follow up on conduct issues in the building both on and off duty-
- Support residents who are sick, injured or in distress and direct them towards medical or professional services-
- Participate in move in and move out days, McGill Open House and other Residence activities- Training and development- Attend and actively participate in Floor Fellow Orientation (TBA) and in-service training throughout the year.-
- May participate as required in select working groups or committees- Administrative Tasks- Attend all team and individual meetings called by their Residence Life Manager-
- Complete regular written updates as required by SupervisorComplete duty log and incident reports every shift.-
- Complete written updates and reports as requested by supervisor-
- Post and remove signs and notices as requiredCOVID Context- While the general roles and responsibilities of the Floor Fellow position remain the same, certain aspects may look different due to unforeseen circumstances due to the pandemic.- Qualifications- You must have a satisfactory academic standing-
- You must have full-time student status at McGill University-
- You must be able to provide 2 references-
- You must be legally entitled to work in Canada for the duration of the appointment and be able to meet the hourly requirements of the role each week.-
- You must have a valid First Aid certificate (or an equivalent to the Canadian Red Cross Standard First Aid) with CPR/AED Level C-
- Knowledge of French and English. McGill University is an English -language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing.- A
