ABOUT DIRECTIONS YOUTH SERVICES
Directions Youth Services provides 24/7 support to at-risk, homeless, and street-involved youth under 25. Vancouver’s most vulnerable youth can connect with supports, get counselling for trauma, mental health or substance issues, and transition to more permanent housing. Directions runs several facilities and programs for youth throughout Vancouver.
Directions is a division of Family Services of Greater Vancouver (FSGV), which for 90 years has provided trauma counselling and essential resources for children, families and individuals facing all kinds of life’s challenges.
HERE’S WHAT WE CAN DO TOGETHER
This is an entry level
**ON CALL** position to provide initial reception/intake to the Centre, determining eligibility for youth wishing to enter the Centre. The Afterhours Program operates between the hours of midnight to 8:00 AM - seven days a week, and between 08:00 AM to 4:00PM on Saturday and Sunday. This position works to promote safer & healthier alternatives, and where possible, to assist in their transition from the street to residences and providing referral information where possible to ineligible clients, the position will consist of working with a variety of at risk and homeless youth struggling with addiction including those with intellectual, emotional/social challenges, dual diagnosis and sexual abuse victims.
**This position reports to the Afterhours supervisor and/or Manager of Directions Youth Services Centre**
YOUR KEY CONTRIBUTIONS
- Assessment and screening of all youth requesting access to the centre
- Establish rapport with youth in the centre to collaborate with youth identifying individual needs and provide support, encouragement and information on community resources, alcohol and drug information, and advocacy for clients by making referral calls, as required.
- Monitors youth in centre 24 hours per day, ensuring the safety and comfort of clients, by observing client behavior, document and informing supervisor as required.
- Monitors the overall safety of the centre through enforcing centre guidelines by observation to detect inappropriate behavior, drug use, and contraband by performing perimeter walks.
- Participates in the management of emergency situations by initiating first aid, calling emergency medical services, and /or police and defusing situations.
- Responsive to inter-program integrated case management plans, other service agencies and health care professionals in the implementation and revision of client service plans/ terms of service or service restrictions.
- Ensures maintenance of the facility and care of clients by performing cleaning in centre, outdoor clean up, minor repairs, preparation of meals, and or snacks for clients.
- Performs clerical duties as required such as answering phones, filing, sorting, and indexing.
- Maintains daily client logs, notes, documents, forms, reports, completes/enters daily statistical information.
- Participates in training practicum students and trainees in a job shadow model.
- Assist youth in accessing community support by advocating, escorting, and transporting clients to outside referral locations as appropriate.
WHAT YOU BRING
**Education and training**:
- 6 months post-secondary education/certificate in related field
- Current First Aid Certificate and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training an asset
**Experience**:
- Minimum 6 months experience working with youth, preferably in support of youth who have alcohol /drug misuse issues.
- A combination of education and experience may be considered
**Proof of Covid-19 vaccination status will be required**
