**Position Overview**:
The General English Stream helps students develop English language skills for personal or professional reasons. Morning classes focus strongly on developing fluency in speaking and listening as well as grammar, reading, and writing.

Students entering this level are from a range of communicative competencies and abilities. They may communicate easily on everyday matters, but with a limited range in style and expression. They may communicate with some confidence in social conversations, and in less common situations. They demonstrate a range of common everyday vocabulary and idioms but may avoid topics with unfamiliar vocabulary, or students might already be able to communicate facts and ideas in detail using a variety of structures and vocabulary. Students are reasonably fluent and can use the telephone for interpersonal communication. Pronunciation difficulties may exist and may restrict overall communication. Students at this level can write and read well about familiar topics, but still have some difficulty in more specialized contexts. They can understand the purpose and main idea of written texts and can write short reports, short letters, and notes on familiar topics
**_. _**They are reasonably fluent and have good listening comprehension but may still require repetition.

As an instructor you will develop students’ confidence and ability to communicate effectively in complex social situations that require skills such as negotiating, persuading, empathizing, sympathizing and more. Sociolinguistic aspects are introduced and dealt with throughout the term. Understanding the sense of North American humour and jokes may also be covered.

Students will also develop their knowledge of grammatical structures, and will learn to use more complex tense and sentence forms consistently in their speaking with mínimal errors. Students will gain an awareness of linguistic markers such as intonation, rhythm, and pitch to assist their comprehension. Vocabulary development extends beyond the everyday, and reading and writing skills are expanded. They will learn appropriate idioms for use in a variety of situations.

- Participation in teacher-student events, activities, staff meetings and graduation ceremony
- Preparation and invigilation of examinations
- Marking and grading
- Maintenance of class Nexus pages
- Other duties as assigned

**Education and Qualifications**:

- Undergraduate degree required
- TESL or CELTA required
- Minimum 800 hours of experience in the following:

- teaching high intermediate and advanced listening strategies
- teaching high intermediate and advanced pronunciation
- addressing high intermediate and advanced pronunciation issues
- teaching writing for communication
- teaching high intermediate and advanced conversational functions and strategies in complex social situations
- teaching sociolinguistic competence
- Minimum 1600 hours or more experience in the following:

- teaching communicative grammar at both the high-intermediate and advanced level
- teaching high intermediate and advanced vocabulary acquisition, idiomatic expressions and colloquialisms
- Extensive familiarity with materials available for supplementation (online resources, videos, TV shows, movies, textbooks)
- Experience teaching English as an additional or foreign language to adults
- Ability to design and balance course content through a combination of student interest and key topics
- Ability to engage students whether they are in class or through alternate delivery
- Familiarity with different English accents
- Ability to foster confidence and independent learning in learners
- Ability to adapt tasks and lessons to meet the diverse goals of the students.
- Experience incorporating technology in teaching
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal, negotiating, and conflict-resolution skills to deal effectively with a wide variety of situations
- Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs and issues of a diverse student body
- Strong computer skills, including use of Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with online tools and resources for teaching
- Varied teaching experience is considered an asset (in terms of skill, level, demographic, and location)
- Experience teaching multi-level classes in considered an asset
