The Ministry of Treasury Board and Finance is responsible for budget planning, financial management and economic analysis, as well as the administration of tax and revenue programs.
The Tax Policy branch, as part of the Ministry, provides information and recommendations on tax policies and works to implement government decisions. The branch also monitors tax developments in Canada and abroad and works with other government ministries on tax issues affecting Alberta.

Join the Treasury Board and Finance team as the **Manager, Tax Policy**, where your expertise will directly impact Alberta’s fiscal position, ensuring fairness, accountability, and sustainability in provincial tax policies.
As the Manager, Tax Policy, you will provide expert advice and recommendations to senior management, the Deputy Minister, and the Minister of Treasury Board and Finance. Your work will directly inform decisions made by the Treasury Board and Cabinet, shaping Alberta’s tax policy and fiscal strategy. This role demands strategic thinking, technical expertise, and a deep understanding of tax legislation to navigate the complexities of Alberta’s fiscal landscape.
You will monitor developments related to taxation and other public policy issues and conduct original research in order to anticipate and respond to inquiries from senior management, elected officials, and other government departments. This includes using computerized models and highly confidential micro-level tax data to simulate the impact of alternative taxation scenarios.
You will contribute to the development of tax policies, analyze fiscal data, and provide recommendations on legislative changes, all while ensuring that Alberta’s tax policies are implemented effectively and fairly. **Roles and responsibilities include**:
**1. Strategic Policy Development**
- Research and analyze tax issues relevant to Alberta, providing recommendations to senior decision-makers.
- Develop complex models to simulate tax scenarios and forecast revenue impacts.
- Monitor public policy developments in Alberta and other jurisdictions, assessing their implications on provincial tax measures.
- Draft policy documents, Cabinet Reports, and briefing materials for Treasury Board and Finance leadership.
**2. Fiscal Planning and Accountability**
- Contribute to the tax chapter of Alberta’s provincial budget, annual reports, and fiscal plans.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive models of federal and provincial tax systems.
- Provide fiscal impact assessments of proposed tax policies and ensure legislative compliance.
**3. Communication and Stakeholder Engagement**
- Draft and review official communications, press releases, and responses on tax policy issues for internal and external stakeholders.
- Liaise with federal and provincial government officials, tax professionals, stakeholder groups, and Albertans to communicate tax policies and legislative changes.
- Represent Alberta’s tax policy objectives in inter-departmental working groups and intergovernmental committees.
**4. Legislative Alignment and Compliance**
- Identify necessary changes to ensure Alberta’s tax legislation aligns with provincial tax policy.
- Collaborate with the Canada Revenue Agency and Tax and Revenue Administration to ensure administrative practices align with provincial policies.
- Provide expertise to Cabinet Policy Committees and Legislative Review Committees regarding legislative amendments.
