The Respite Program supports adults and children with intellectual disabilities and their families offering different program options to meet individual need.
The Respite Program is currently hiring a Respite Shift Coordinator. This position is best suited for someone that can fulfill our pledge to encourage participant independence, advocate for community inclusion, foster friendships and provide positive role modeling.
**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**:
**Client Services**:
Responsible to ensure the needs of program participants are met i.e. physically, emotionally, medically, and behaviorally.
Responsible to complete program planning to include a variety of structured leisure activities, volunteer opportunities and skill building opportunities appropriate to age, skill level, interests and goals; provide leadership in executing the program plan.
Responsible for dispensing medication and ensuring that all medication charting is completed in compliance with established agency policies, as required.
Required to complete safety checks, logbook recordings, intake and discharge functions.
Advocate on behalf of the program participants to promote health and well-being.
Ensure that participants follow through on personal care routines and routines of daily living.
Provide personal care to participants as required.
Provide intervention for any behavioural challenges.
Liaise with parents, caregivers, volunteers, and community supports/partners as required.
Responsible for the transportation of participants in program vehicles.
Prepare and distribute meals, snacks/nourishments as outlined on the approved menu.
Complete house maintenance duties as well as the general organization and maintenance of property and program supplies.
**WORKING CONDITIONS**:
This is a Permanent Full-Time position working 36 hours per week.
Flexibility in scheduling is required to meet program requirements; schedule including days, afternoons, weekends, and overnights and will include a ½ hour paid meal break.
On-call Responsibilities - weekends-rotational work schedule
- required to remain within the city and approximately ½ hr. from the facility should it be necessary to go into the facility.
Some travel is associated with this position.
Ability to lift/move up to 50 lbs.
Frequent lifting, twisting, bending, crouching, reaching, pushing and pulling.
Walking and standing for long periods.
Some kneeling, running may be required.
**QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS**:
Completed two (2) years of Community College in related education (Developmental Service Worker diploma, Child and Youth Worker diploma or equivalent) in the area of developmental disabilities.
Current Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification.
Current First Aid & CPR Certification.
Current Safe Food Handling Certification preferred.
Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
**EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE**:
Minimum of one (1) year of prior work experience in a social service setting providing direct care to children, youth and adults who have intellectual disabilities, dealing with crises.
**SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES**:
Valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's License is required, current original copy of driver's abstract, which is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, also required.
Fluent French verbal and written communication skills are an asset.
May require screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
