Peer Support Worker

NISA is a peer-led organization tasked with providing mental health recovery services in Sudbury, Ontario. All staff self-identify as having had some lived experience of mental health challenges and are dedicated to making a difference in the lives of their peers. We’ve been operating in Sudbury since 1998 with the motto _Being, Belonging, Becoming_. In our programs, peers can **be** who they are without judgement or discrimination; they take part in a community of peers in a space where they **belong**; and our aim is to foster recovery and personal growth so that individuals can define and **become** who they want to be. We acknowledge the value and expertise that comes from personal lived experiences, and stive to provide a space free of discrimination, stigma, and exclusion in all forms.
Our Leadership Team focuses on supporting NISA’s core values and culture, as well as accountability, dedication to ensuring quality services, providing supportive supervision, and advocating for peer voices in the mental health sector. Specifically, supportive supervision is based on mutual respect, strength-based, commitment to ongoing learning, self-awareness, integrity, effective communication, trusting relationships/transparency, autonomy with accountability, and personal growth.
The Peer Support Worker is responsible for delivering peer support and recovery services to NISA members. The Peer Support Worker will provide one-to-one support, as well as prepare and deliver group-based programming in-house, in the community, or at partnering organizations. As the front-line of NISA, peer workers are also responsible for acting in accordance with the core values of peer support, of modelling recovery oriented and trauma informed practices, and for reenforcing the code of conduct among NISA membership.
**Work Responsibilities**:
- Provide one-to-one assistance and support to members at NISA using a recovery-oriented, strengths-based approach.
- Prepare and facilitate various structured and unstructured mental health groups.
- Help the Program Manager in creating monthly programming calendars.
- Assist members in identifying their personal recovery goals and setting objectives to reach those goals.
- Recognize and respect recovery-based philosophy including individual’s right to self-determination and autonomy.
- Recruit and mentor member volunteers for programs as needed.
- Assist with and participate in monthly membership meeting.
- Meet with potential members and help integrate them into the organization.
- Provide referral to appropriate services within the community.
- Assist members in accessing and obtaining other community resources where needed.
- Advocate with and for members to ensure adequate resources are available.
- Ensure members have awareness and understanding of rights relating to services.
- Ensure individuals’ contacts are recorded appropriately and in a timely manner utilizing database program.
- Ensure that monthly, annual and other required reporting documentation are completed.
- Provide assistance to Programs Manager with community networking and additional outreach or educational tasks.
- Participate in regularly scheduled meetings with the Program Manager.
- Promote NISA’s mission, vision and values to the membership and to the community.
- Represent NISA in a professional manner.
- Maintain confidentiality of information and documents relevant to NISA members, personnel, and volunteers.
- Direct and assist in the daily maintenance of the space, and encourage members to take ownership and help maintain the space.
- Complete other assigned tasks that may be necessary for the operations of NISA and the delivery of its programs.

- Regularly reflecting and participating upon relevant personal wellness strategies.
- Being open and sharing any work-related needs to the appropriate staff, for the purpose of accommodation, support, and clarity.
- Participating in regularly scheduled breaks and other wellness activities to maintain your work and practice.
- Maintaining your personal wellness - having our own supports and maintaining your wellness.
**Knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in this role**:
- Have personal lived experience within the mental health system.
- A diploma, degree or Canadian equivalent in health or a related discipline (Social Service Work, Social Work, Psychology, Humanities, Social Sciences) is considered an asset.
