**JOB OPENING**: Sandblaster/Painting Assistant
- This position is a unionized position and covered by the collective agreement between Trecan and the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry of the United States and Canada, Local 56 (the “Union”). Preference will be given to internal applicants with the necessary qualifications to perform the duties of the position. The successful applicant will be required to be a member in good standing or become a member of the Union._
Trecan Combustion has an immediate opening for a Sandblaster/Painting Assistant to join our team. We are a Monday to Friday operation with each shift starting at 7:00am and ending at 3:30pm.
**JOB TASKS**:
- Use abrasive-blasting equipment to remove adhering scale, sand, paint, grease, tar, rust, and dirt, efficiently and effectively from Snowmelters and other hard-composition objects. Ensure surface preparation of Snowmelters and other objects requiring surface coating.
- Shovel or pour abrasives, such as sand, grit, or shot of specified grade into machine hopper or blast pot.
- Mask specified areas of object to protect from abrading action.
- Examine finished Snowmelters and objects to ensure conformance to specifications.
- Use sandblasting cabinet.
- Maintain equipment in proper working order through general maintenance and cleaning.
- Use compressor and compressor equipment in proper manner.
- Assist painter with painting of Snowmelters and other objects.
- Use brushes and hand-held spray guns.
- Assist with appropriate clean up and disposal of paints.
- Keep blast tent, compressor building and paint shop tidy and in effective working order.
- Keep paint shop lunchroom tidy.
- Maintain accurate records and inventory of blast media. Assist with maintaining accurate records and inventory of paints.
- Appropriate clean up and disposal of blast media.
- Give adequate notice when consumables (blast media, etc.) are low so reordering can take place.
- Attend training courses when required by Trecan (ex. forklift course).
- Exposed to fumes or airborne particles and flying blast media.
- Use ladders and scaffolds properly.
- Handling heavy loads. May lift or move up to 50 pounds
- Climb up into, over and under Snowmelters.
- Wear all personal protective equipment (PPE) required. This includes CSA approved safety boots, safety glasses, face shields, sandblasting hood, gloves, respirators, hearing protection, hard hat, etc. to work in a safe manner.
- Work in a manner that ensures safety of fellow workers.
- Attend weekly Tool Box Meeting.
- Assist with facility and equipment maintenance.
- Ensure all labour time is accurately recorded or logged in the time/labour tracking system to reflect the current job.
- Whenever receiving an ITP (inspection test plan) or work order, review the requirements, follow the instructions, and sign off each step as required when complete. Ensure a Shop Foreman or Production Manager signs off where specified on the ITP.
- Ensure all activities are carried out and all tools are used in accordance with Company policies and regulatory laws and regulations.
- Working safely is a condition of employment. No impairment while on duty.
- Report any damaged equipment, faulty equipment or safety hazards to the Shop Foreman, Facilities Maintenance, Production Manager or Management.
- Perform other duties (clean up, etc.) as determined by the Shop Foreman or Management.
**REQUIREMENTS**:
- At least 1 year sandblasting experience.
- Completion of High School.
- Certification in confined space or ability to obtain confined space certification.
- Ability to work as a team player with a positive attitude.
- Ability to ensure timely execution of tasks and completion of assigned jobs.
- Read and understand work orders.
- Ability to perform strenuous physical labour.
- Ability to operate required equipment in a safe and responsible manner.
- Comply with all safety policies and procedures.
- Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers, shop foremen and managers to ensure that projects are completed properly.
- Maintain up-to-date certifications required by Trecan over the term of employment.
**WORKING CONDITIONS**:
- Working outdoors in weather conditions applicable to Nova Scotia.
- Work in uncomfortable environments including loud noise level (requiring hearing protection to be worn) and be exposed to fumes or airborne particles (requiring a respirator to be worn).
- Work in uncomfortable positions such as bending over, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, climbing, sitting, and standing.
- Must be able to climb up into, over and under snowmelters.
- May lift or move up to 50 pounds.
**Salary**: From $22.26 per hour
