- Cultural Support Worker**
**Hours**: 35 hrs/wk.
**Range: $**20.06 - $30.39/Hour.
**Location**:1288 Weston Road - Mt.Dennis EarlyON Hub.
**Position**:Regular, Full-time, Unionized.
**Summary**:Native Child and Family Services of Toronto strives to provide a life of quality, well-being, caring and healing for our children and families in the Toronto Native Community. We do this by creating a service model that is culture-based and respects the values of Native people, the extended family, and the right to self-determination and through the integration of holistic, culturally-based prevention services that are child-centered, family-focused, and community-driven.
**Primary Responsibilities**:
Under the direction of the Supervisor, Aboriginal Child and Family Centre, the Cultural Zhishay will aid in developing, coordinating and facilitating Aboriginal programs and services for Male Caregivers/those who identify as male in a manner that promotes caregiver roles and responsibilities in acceptance of Aboriginal cultures and teachings.
- Provide fair, respectful and culturally relevant services to male caregivers/those who identify as a male who also identify as Aboriginal or have children or families, consistent with the mission, vision, and values of Native Child and Family Services of Toronto.
- Develop or assist program staff with the integration of Aboriginal knowledge and material for implementation and facilitation of culturally
- based early learning education and prevention for male caregivers and families including children 0 to 6 years of age.
- Provide Cultural support and guidance to male caregivers on matters related to early learning and development, family life, relationships and all other matters impacting their life circumstances. - Work with team members to complete referrals for Holistic or Clinical Services if required.
- Work with Knowledge Carriers and facilitators to support cultural programs and protocols.
- Provide cultural programs; considering the interest, age and ability of participants.
- Ensure programs include the “on the land” experience.
- Support cultural events and activities.
- Conduct oneself in a manner consistent with the concept of an “Aboriginal role model”.
- Initiate and attend meetings with internal and external services.
- Perform program outreach by utilizing internal and external resources and by participating in community events.
- Maintain accurate reporting, case files, and statistical data and, subsequently, submit reports.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
**Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills**:
- Education and experience in Aboriginal culture.
- Aboriginal Ancestry is an asset.
- Experience in working with the community.
- Pass a Vulnerable Sector Police Record check.
- Knowledge of Aboriginal culture in an urban environment, including ceremonies and protocol.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively or as a team when appropriate.
- Leadership skills. - Flexibility in working program hours, including evenings and weekends.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to work collaboratively with others from a strength-based and culturally-based approach.
- Ability to maintain the confidentiality of all information related to children, parents and staff.
- Demonstrated understanding, and commitment to, integrating the Native Child and Family Services of Toronto Mission and values into practice, service and relationships.
- Demonstrated understanding of workplace health and safety practices and understanding of an employee’s responsibility under current legislation. Ability to work effectively with all levels of staff, maintain effective communication and working relationships, demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, tact, and sensitivity and build strong internal relationships.
