Shawenim Abinoojii is dedicated to the sacred duty of loving, protecting, and nurturing Anishinaabe children, youth, and families. This is a non-profit service provider governed by the First Nations served by the organization. Based on the teachings and values of the seven sacred teachings (love, respect, courage, honesty, wisdom, humility, and truth), The Sacred Care Caregiver will provide primary support and nurturing care for the youth in their home. Sacred Care homes respond to the needs of youth in care with complex needs while honoring their cultural identity and connection to their First Nation. Reporting to the Sacred Care Case Manager, the _Sacred Care Caregiver will_ be responsible for providing direct care along with wraparound supports from the organization and partner resources. The _Sacred Care Caregiver _will work within a team that serves to provide comprehensive case management services/holistic circle of care. Becoming a specialized caregiver is a rewarding and impactful role that provide essential support to youth who have specific needs. Shawenim Abinoojii provides intensive Case Management support with access to specialized Shawenim Abinoojii Resources, including Wellness and Cultural Services and an alternative High School intended to meet the unique needs of young people.

**OVERVIEW**: As a Specialized Foster Parent, you will play a crucial role in providing stability, guidance, and unconditional love to children who have experienced trauma, behavioral challenges, or other adversities. You will receive specialized training to address the unique needs of these children, offering them a safe and nurturing environment where they can heal and thrive.

**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Provide nurturing care and guidance to youth who may have behavioral or emotional challenges.
- Implement strategies learned through specialized training to help children develop coping skills and regulate their emotions effectively.
- Offer a supportive and understanding environment for children who have been exposed to trauma.
- Utilize specialized techniques to help youth process their experiences and build on their strengths.
- Create a safe and nurturing environment for youth who may be facing legal issues.
- Assist children in navigating their circumstances and accessing necessary resources and services.
- Provide care with compassion, patience, and empathy, understanding the unique needs and experiences of each youth.
- Serve as a positive role model and advocate for the well-being of the youth in your care.
- Ongoing crisis intervention, including responding to incidents and working cooperatively with staff and resources to create improved experiences.
- Maintain strong partnerships and communication with resources mandated to support youth wellness and safety.
- Partnering with the Shawenim Abinoojii Wellness Team to provide culturally relevant and supportive experience to engage young people in knowing who they are and from where they come.
- Planning and delivering services alongside resources focused on supporting the long-term wellbeing of young people.

**QUALIFICATIONS**:

- Genuine compassion for children and a desire to make a difference in their lives.
- Patience, empathy, and a nurturing demeanor.
- Willingness to undergo specialized training to address the unique needs of children in foster care.
- Ability to provide a safe and stable home environment.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Flexibility and adaptability to meet the evolving needs of children in care.
- Min of two years related experience in the human services field or caregiver role.
- Experience in life skills to support individuals
- Knowledge of Community based resources
- Knowledge in the areas of Addictions, Attachment, Mental health & Trauma & how it impacts families.
- Knowledge of the Child & Family Services (CFS) sector & foster care legislation.
- Demonstrate knowledge &/or understanding of Indigenous perspectives, First Nations culture & traditional philosophies.
- Demonstrated skills and competence to establish supportive, trusting relationships with individuals and other stakeholders
- Knowledge of assessment, crisis intervention
- Satisfactory Child Abuse, Vulnerable Person Check & Criminal Record Check
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office, word processing (MS Word), Spreadsheets (Excel), E-mail (Outlook) & Internet
- Strong understanding of child development
- Excellent communication, organization, problem solving, & team skills.
- Ability to speak Anishinaabe preferred.

**SUPPORT FOR CAREGIVERS**:
Support for foster caregivers is provided through the Shawenim Abinoojii Care and Wellness teams as well as through Southeast Child and Family Services Direct Service Workers.
