Major

**Responsibilities**:

- Daily Animal Husbandry:Organizes, distributes and verifies the work of the team members
-Oversees day-to-day operations and ensures daily team tasks are scheduled to meet the needs of the facility operations. Coordinates with other teams when assistance is required to complete the tasks.
-Ensures team members have an equitable workload.
-Ensures team members are trained and follow approved procedures for all daily animal husbandry tasks.
-Ensures team members have the required materials to accomplish daily tasks.
-Ensures daily activity logs, cage labels, and other logs are available.
-Ensures animal illness and injuries are reported to veterinary care staff correctly.
-Performs animal euthanasia and disposal following approved procedures.
-Maintains inventory of consumables and re-orders supplies using the MMP based on a new pull system.

Caging Equipment Sanitation:Ensures team tasks are scheduled to meet the needs of the facility operations.
-Ensures team members are trained and follow approved procedures for equipment sanitation.
-Ensures team members have the required materials.
-Ensures Biological indicator tests are performed and recorded.
-Ensures cage wash machine is cleaned weekly and autoclave is maintained.

Facility Cleaning/Weekly Tasks:Ensures team weekly tasks are scheduled to meet the needs of the facility operations.
-Ensures team members are changing food bins regularly.
-Ensures ventilated and conventional cage racks are sanitized on a determined schedule.

Automated Watering System:Ensures automated watering system daily, weekly and monthly tasks are scheduled.
-Notify responsible personnel of any problems or alarms.

Boarding/ Darwin Animal Use Management Software:Processes animal order requests and prints Darwin cage cards for animal receiving, imports and transfers.
-Activates and deactivates Darwin cards daily.
-Performs Darwin reconciliation scan weekly.
-Maintains an animal census record to adjust the distribution of work throughout the team on a regular basis.
-Investigates and validates discrepancies when they occur. Acts to reconcile these transactions and relays this information to the Office Billing staff member before billing is completed.
-Receives requests from research staff members for additional cage cards or other issues related to census and breeding of animals.

Safety:Ensures eye wash stations are checked weekly.
-Ensures emergency numbers are up to date and visible to all staff and research staff.
-Ensures team members know where accident reports are and how to complete them.
-Ensures compliance with safety regulations in the use of equipment.
-Ensures proper storage, handling and disposal of hazardous materials.

Repairs and Equipment Maintenance:Ensures all animal husbandry equipment is in working order.
-Makes small repairs where possible.
-Following any repair work, ensures equipment is in working condition.
-Makes calls and arranges service and preventative maintenance
-Participates and provides insight and feedback in the design of specialized equipment fabrication request such as primate enclosures and other animal facility related equipment.

Resource person:Answers questions of research staff and team members via personal knowledge or by putting them in contact with the relevant people.
-Participates in the development and troubleshooting of new projects to better incorporate new procedures into facility operations.
-Ensures research staff know how to contact veterinary care staff, laboratory staff and office staff if not on site, or act as a liaison where possible.
-Available on-call on a rotating schedule to address emergencies that could impact animal welfare and the quality of research
-Develops procedures and makes recommendations to improve team and facility operation efficiency.
-Researches equipment and supplies at reduced prices for budget cost savings.
-Keeps an inventory of all equipment and supplies used by the facility and purchases all animal care supplies.

Team Building:Coordinates cross-training of team members.
-Coordinates daily team meetings.
-Builds an effective team using members’ respective strengths.
-Acknowledges and helps resolve conflicts before they escalate.
-Maintains strong team morale and promotes unity within the team and between teams.
- Must be available on weekend on rotation.- Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level 3 on a scale of 0-4._
