**SCOPE**
Reporting to the Manager, Animal Care Facility, the incumbent organizes and supervises day to day activities of the University’s Animal Care Facility (ACF). The incumbent has primary responsibility for the daily operations and animal welfare of all species housed in the ACF (aquatics and rodent facilities) They serve as support to and back-up of the Manager, Animal Care Facility by contributing to the smooth running of operations, equipment, maintenance and schedules across both facilities. The incumbent observes and monitors uses their training and skills to ensure research teams are compliant with approved protocols and procedures through observation of activities and monitoring the health of the research animals, intervening when necessary, and assists with the work of the University Animal Research Ethics Committee (AREC) through providing technical guidance to researchers on completing protocols, as well as recording and compiling of feedback of protocols and amendments.

**PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Arrange and oversee post-approval monitoring visits to research labs; ensure compliance with approved research procedures and provide technical guidance and assistance to research teams.
- Care for and monitor the condition of animals; maintain the animal facility to ensure optimal conditions for the experimental animals this includes regular measurement and verification of air quality in the animal housing rooms..
- Assist the Manager with facility operations and oversee the work of other technicians and or staff.
- Monitor animal health and disease detection; perform skilled technical manipulations on aquatic species and rodents (injections, restraint, treatments, euthanasia).
- Maintain equipment, perform minor repairs and arrange for service and major repairs.
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations. Monitor and maintain Facility sanitation and upkeep by ensuring that proper procedures and guidelines are adhered to. Liaise with EHS as needed.
- Deliver workshops on use of the Facility, proper animal care and handling of animals. Make recommendations on how to improve workshops and assist in implementation of improvements.
- Act as resource person; instruct others on procedures and operation of equipment; provide technical guidance and assistance concerning work methods, the use of equipment and techniques, and the analysis of results.
- Contribute technical, animal husbandry and care expertise, and report on all activities in the animal facilities, and in the field to meetings of the AREC; document research protocols and prepare required reports for approval and transmission.
- Provide technical assistance to scientific staff in conduct of procedures.

**QUALIFICATIONS**
- Bachelor of Science degree in a relevant field with two to four years of related experience OR Diploma of Collegial Studies (three-year technical DEC) in Animal Health Technology, with four to seven years of research animal experience.
- Able to perform skilled technical manipulations on a variety of species e.g. aquatic and rodents (injections, restraint, treatments, euthanasia).
- Able to perform all routine animal care activities with little or no supervision.
- Team worker, strong interpersonal skills, conscientious and compassionate.
- Ability to draft routine reports and review animal care protocols.
- Demonstrated problem solving abilities.
- Good spoken and written English (level 4); Basic spoken French (level 3).
- In-depth knowledge of CCAC, WHIMIS and other safety guidelines including Standard Operating Procedures.
- Ability to differentiate between colors as attested by successful completion of a Color Blind Test - Ishihara Plates.
- Physical ability to perform primary responsibilities (e.g. maintain facility equipment) attested by successful completion of medical evaluation to the University’s satisfaction.
- Self-motivated and enthusiastic.
- Continuing interest and active in keeping up to date on procedures and new developments in the field.
- Registered Laboratory Animal Technician (RLAT).
