**Project Summary**:
Same-day discharge total hip and knee arthroplasty protocols are novel but have generated interest in hospitals because of the scarcity of inpatient beds, the opportunity to increase patient satisfaction and the ability to reduce system costs. Perioperative advances, including mínimally invasive surgical approaches, transexamic acid, and multimodal pre-emptive analgesia, have made this protocol both feasible and safe. When patients are appropriately selected, the rate of adverse events and functional outcomes are similar to patients who underwent an inpatient protocol. A multidisciplinary team at Peace Arch Hospital will collaborate to increase the rate of same day discharge to 30% of all eligible patients receiving hip arthroplasty.

- Ability to work independently and on a team of diverse stakeholders
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Basic knowledge of the health care system
- Interest in learning quality improvement methodology
- Experience collecting quantitative and qualitative data
- Experience working with databases
- Comfortable providing feedback and contributing to discussions about project activities
- Working knowledge of Microsoft office tools including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
- Access to a computer and reliable internet connection for the duration of the project

You must be a current post-secondary student and located in British Columbia for the duration of the internship program (May 1 - August 31, 2023). This project involves hybrid work with one-day per week in-person work at Peace Arch Hospital in White Rock, BC.

As per the current public health order, full vaccination against COVID-19 is a condition of employment with the BC Patient Safety & Quality Council as of October 26, 2021.
