The DynaLIFE Microbiology department operates 24/7 in order to provide quality service to acute care hospitals, long-term care facilities, community physicians and regional clients from Central Alberta through remote and rural communities in Northern Alberta, Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Microbiology partners with our clients to play a key role in training, antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention and control. The Medical Laboratory Assistant II is primarily responsible for processing all microbiology specimens accurately and efficiently including unpacking, sorting, data entry, accessioning, processing and preparing specimens for testing, transportation and storage as required.

**Major Functions and Responsibilities**
- Determines suitability of specimens submitted by following established policies.
- Unpacks, sorts, data enters, accessions and plants microbiology and mycology specimens according to guidelines outlined.
- Responsible for receiving, coding, accessioning/labeling, preparing and/or planting a variety of chemical samples for testing, transportation and storage.
- Prepares reagents and stains as required.
- Planting of microbiology and mycology specimens
- Data entry of specimens
- Adhering to company and department policies and procedures including safety and quality
- Where assigned, performs and document quality control and preventative maintenance equipment.
- Uses Laboratory Information System as required by departmental duties.
- Operates various technology/equipment which may include: BACTEC, Autoclave, Isoplator, Anoxomats, Centrifuges, Automatic Gram Staining Instrument, WASP, BD/Kiestra TLA and BD Max molecular equipment.

Required Experience
- Must have experience as a Medical Laboratory Assistant II or student practical training as a Medical Laboratory Assistant II within the last 2 years including experience within:

- Evaluation of specimen suitability for testing
- Specimen acceptance
- LIS data entry processes

**Minimum Qualifications**
- Successful completion of a recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant training program or equivalent

- Preference for this position will be given to bargaining unit members in accordance with the terms and conditions of the DynaLIFE/HSAA Collective Agreement
