Position Purpose:
Oversees daily operations and is responsible for providing pedagogical and technical support to faculty, instructors, and students. Responsible for all technical aspects of the body bequeathal program, including donor preparation, embalming and management. Leads the development and implementation of all laboratory processes as well as the maintenance of anatomical specimens. Liaises between anatomy faculty and prosection staff to ensure that high quality prosections and anatomical specimens are prepared to meet teaching, assessment, and research needs. Ensures quality control of dissections prepared by prosection staff.

In this role, your responsibilities will include:

- 1. Team leadership: Manages prosection and anatomy lab technical staff within the Faculty. Responsible for recruitment, professional development, performance management and conflict management for the laboratory staff under their responsibility. Train and advise staff on lab procedures and prosection techniques. Conduct team meetings to review weekly objectives and divisional priorities. Ensure that tasks are distributed appropriately. Participates in the interviewing, selection process and training of new facilitators. Meet with the Manager of the Research Shared Services and Division of Anatomy to discuss objectives, initiatives, and potential challenges.
- 2. Academic Support: Under the in-lab supervision of Faculty members, program directors and/or course directors, organizes and may facilitate small group, student-directed learning for medical, graduate, and undergraduate students in the laboratory. May also facilitate small group learning in case-based learning (CBL) for students based on established curricular priorities in the medical program. Prepare and maintain academic and administrative documents and reports. Participate in various administrative duties such as supporting the creation of program syllabi, goals and objectives for the Masters in Anatomical Sciences Program as well as all learning outcomes related to courses and workshops in the Division of Anatomy. May be asked to provide support to Faculty members, Program Directors and Division Head in preparing a variety of lecture materials including presentation slides and handouts. Participates in the updating of laboratory computers, administration of laboratory exams, and administration of laboratory quizzes.
- 3. Specimen maintenance: Develop dissection plans for new prosections which may include the creation of illustrations detailing complex anatomical concepts. Supervises repairs, maintenance of the inventory of the Anatomy Program osteology collection, including all articulated skeletons performed by Prosection and Jr. Prosection personnel. During peak times and for the purpose of ongoing training, perform various prosections as required.
- 4. Specimen handling: May be called upon to receive body donations during weekends and holidays. Organizes the storage of human cadavers & cadaveric material in order that these items are readily available for the teaching and research requirements of the Anatomy Program. May be called upon to interact with families of those who have bequeathed their bodies for scientific and learning purposes. Supervises the handling of transfer and reception of cadavers and other anatomical material, working closely with the Chief Coroner’s office, Local Coroner, funeral directors, crematoria and other university and hospital institutions. Responsible for the completion of all necessary paperwork required by the provisions of the Anatomy Act and Human Tissue Gift Act of the Province of Ontario.
- 5. Needs Assessment: Assesses the need for laboratory equipment through recommendations provided by prosection team. Liaise with faculty, staff, and clients to ensure that anatomical resources meet the needs of users and programs.
