**About Us**:
The Court Services Division of the Nova Scotia Department of Justice is dedicated to excellent service and the provision of fair and accessible administration of justice, including court administration and security.

The Division provides administrative support to the courts listed: Nova Scotia Court of Appeal, Supreme Court of Nova Scotia (including Family Division), Provincial Court, Family Court, Small Claims Court, Probate Court and Bankruptcy Court. The courts act independently from the government to address individual cases.

**About Our Opportunity**:
As a Justice Officer 3 (Scheduler) at the Halifax Law Courts, you will be responsible for scheduling matters (both Criminal and Civil) in the Justice Systems Applications (specifically JEIN and CIS). You will be responsible for the monitoring of cases, preparing and distributing court orders and dockets, and you may be called upon to assist with regular duties of a Justice Officer 3.

**Primary Accountabilities**:

- responsible for scheduling and monitoring of cases, **both criminal and civil.**:

- preparation and distribution of court orders and dockets, document management and statistical data collection.
- liaising with the Judiciary and the legal profession on a daily basis and responding to general public inquiries and information requests.
- clerk will train and mentor new staff in the day-to-day operations.
- may be required to attend court and perform court related functions, along with performing duties of a Justice of the Peace.
- performs the position duties in accordance with and assigned under the Court Officials Act.

**Qualifications and Experience**:
As the successful Justice Officer 3 (Scheduler), you will have two years of post-secondary education in a related discipline plus five years of related experience in a legal environment; an equivalent combination of training and experience with exposure to justice system will be considered.

You must be fair and impartial to all clients using a high degree of confidentiality. Your excellent interpersonal and communication skills allow you to manage complex, sensitive and stressful situations. Tact and discretion are essential.

You must demonstrate an understanding and knowledge of the Rules and Statutes that govern the courts as well as a sound working knowledge of legal documents, forms, court procedures and legal terminology. In conjunction with legal research skills, you will demonstrate a high level of initiative and problem-solving abilities and readily accept responsibilities.

The following would be considered assets: working knowledge of the _Civil Procedure Rules_ of Nova Scotia.

We will assess the above qualifications using one or more of the following tools: written examination, typing test, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

**Equivalency**:
Equivalencies include, but are not limited to:

- A 1 year certificate/diploma in a related discipline plus 6 years of related experience
- A 4 year Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline plus 3 years of related experience
- A 3 year Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline plus 4 years of related experience
- Seven years of related experience with exposure to the Justice System

**Working Conditions**:

- Normal work week is 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day (typically the hours are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, this may vary depending on the operational needs).
- Some travel and overtime may be required.
- You will be exposed to emotional and sensitive issues, dealing with difficult or distraught individuals creates a stressful environment.
- Extensive telephone communication with the general public.
- There is a high demand for accuracy and attention to detail while working in a high volume and complex service area.
- Potentially volatile situations, especially in relation to domestic and criminal situations.
- Position requires working under pressure to meet deadlines.
