Irving Shipbuilding Inc. is seeking an **Environmental Specialist**.

**Qualifications**:

- Education Required:

- Bachelor's degree in at least one of the following:

- Environmental Technology
- Bachelor of Science degree (preferably in Environment)
- Bachelor of Engineering degree (Chemical, Environmental, or Civil)
- Eligibility for registration in one of the following:

- PTech/CET with Canadian Provincial professional technologist associations
- EIT with Canadian Provincial professional engineering associations as Licensed to Practice
- Experience Required:

- 2-5 years working in an Occupational Health, Safety and Environment (OHSE) setting, preferably in a heavy industry environment
- Experience in some of the following areas is required:

- Environmental Incident response/reporting
- Transportation of Dangerous Goods regulations
- Environmental legislation (Municipal, Provincial and Federal levels)
- Environmental protection
- Wastewater treatment and NPRI
- ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems
- Green Marine
- High level of professionalism and a strong work ethic
- Demonstrated communication, problem solving, and analytical skills
- Ability to report clearly on outcomes to Managers and Directors
- All successful applicants must meet requirements for Canadian Controlled Goods Program (CGP), Canadian Government Security clearance, and U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR)._

**Key Responsibilities**:

- Provide recommendations and support to ensure compliance with municipal, provincial and federal environmental regulations, studies and monitoring programs
- Support the Green Marine third-party certification and self-assessment program to ensure compliance with Green Marine program criteria and drive continuous improvement in sustainability
- Assist Senior Environmental Specialist in data collection, analysis, preparation of reports and submission of reports to ECCC in support of the E2 and NPRI emissions program across all ISI operational sites
- Develop and maintain data, information, trends
- Executes activities ranging from shipping of hazardous materials located from ISI storage areas, to ensuring all hazardous materials are properly packaged, profiled, and labeled prior to shipment as required by Transportation of Dangerous Goods regulations
- Ensure ISI hazardous material storage facilities comply with Municipal, Provincial and Federal regulations (e.g. National Fire Code of Canada) where applicable, as well as ensure regular inspections and audits
- Maintenance of the SDS system database for all products brought onsite, ensuring full availability and regular updating in accordance with Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Regulations
- Support the environmental aspects of operations and maintenance activities, including the development of procedures and risk assessments to mitigate and/or minimize the environmental effects of activities across ISI
- Provide field expertise and response related to oil and chemical releases and recommend best practices for remediation and clean-up of impacted sites
- Perform regulatory engagement and reporting, as required
- Perform regular spill kit inspections and restocking of all spill response kits
- Act as the operator of an in-situ wastewater treatment plant that discharges to domestic sewer, perform instrumentation troubleshooting, sensor calibrations, water sampling and provide support to identify wastes that can be processed at the plant
- Collaborate with Facilities and Maintenance to schedule preventative maintenance and ensure deficiencies are repaired
- Develop, implement, and administer environmental training for employees and contractors, such as Asbestos Awareness, Lead Awareness, oil and chemical management, Spill Response, HAZMAT management and other environmental processes
- Develop and execute monitoring and sampling programs (welding fume, wastewater, etc.)
