THE OPPORTUNITY
The City is hiring one full-time permanent position and one full-time temporary position. The temporary position will end March 22, 2025. The Operator - Roads is responsible to operate all vehicles and equipment in accomplishing the operations and maintenance tasks assigned in delivering the prescribed programs and services in the Roads section of the City. Depending on the season, this positions duties and responsibilities will vary. Shift work (days, evening and night rotation) will be required during snow and ice control operations. Occasional on call is a requirement during the summer season. This position reports to the Manager of Roads.
This position is part of the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE).
Probationary Rate: $32.58 per hour
Base Rate: $33.54 per hour
Developmental Rate: $34.30 per hour
Qualified Rate: $35.25 per hour
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Roads Maintenance and Operations
- Operate diverse vehicles and equipment in a safe and skillful manner to complete assigned tasks.
- Perform all assigned tasks in roadway snow and ice control operations.
- Repair and replacement of city sidewalks.
- Maintenance of traffic control devices including traffic signs and traffic lights.
- Perform asphalt repair and maintenance.
2. Client Relations
- Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within area of assignment and resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
- Develop and maintain ongoing working relationship with vendors, contractors and various City departments.
- Determine appropriate responses and required assistance to address emergent issues encountered.
- Monitor contractors to ensure they are working safely and work is to the City's specifications.
3. Other Duties
- Understand and adhere to City policies, procedures and standards, whether written or implied, as amended from time to time.
- Provide leadership for Health and Safety by making every reasonable effort to ensure the health and safety of staff within the section.
- Contribute to a positive safety culture by always acting in a safe manner and complying with City safety policies for staff and contractors.
- Complete training and development provided to improve or increase individual competencies related to position responsibilities.
- Act as a steward of the City's Corporate Culture by following the values we live by.
- Perform other job-related duties.
- May provide back up for peer group Operator Utilities.
QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- A minimum of two (2) years' experience in the operation of various equipment.
- Must possess the physical strength and dexterity to perform manual labour for extended periods of time under various weather conditions.
- Strong customer service orientation and the ability to build positive, productive business relationships.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
ASSET QUALIFICATIONS:
- Grader experience.
- Certifications and training in equipment operations.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Valid Alberta Class 3Q Motor Vehicle Operator’s License with air endorsement.
- Must obtain a satisfactory review of a three-year Driver’s Abstract with no more than six (6) demerits.
- Satisfactory assessment on equipment competency must be achieved as part of the recruitment process.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
- 24-hour winter shift schedule in effect; shifts are 12 hours in lengths from 6:00am to 6:00pm or 6:00pm to 6:00am.
- Shift Rotation may be:
- Group 1 - 4 Shifts On - 4 Shifts Off: 3 Shifts On - 3 Shifts Off
- Group 2 - 4 Shifts On - 3 Shifts Off: 3 Shifts On - 4 Shifts Off
- Overtime may be required.
- Requires work outdoors in all conditions, working in an office environment, working in shop work bays and in proximity to active vehicular traffic.
- All employees shall act in a safe manner at all times and will report any unsafe conditions, procedures or acts for the benefit of the City. Continual adherence to the City Safety Policy is mandatory.
- It is the responsibility of the employees to keep current on WHMIS and other safety-related procedures.
