Funeral Director Assistant

The Funeral Director Assistant works to support Henry Walser Funeral Home’s mission to be a team of caring and compassionate professionals who are committed to providing funeral services that help families and friends honour their departed loved ones in a manner that helps to facilitate the healing process. They do this by providing support to the funeral directors in caring for families in a time of need in a professional, sympathetic manner and following their wishes for the care of their loved one.
- **THIS IS A FULL TIME, ON-SITE POSITION, WORKING A 4-WEEK ROTATION THAT INCLUDES WEEKDAYS, WEEKENDS AND EVENING SHIFTS.**_
Operational Responsibilities
- Transferring the deceased from place of death to the funeral home
- Preparing visitation room and/or chapel for services including caskets, flowers, memorabilia, photos, ceremonial/religious ceremonial consideration, special requests from the family etc
- Accommodating the needs of the family during a service and/or visitation including greeting them at the door, escorting them to the proper visitation room, hanging coats etc
- Service set up at churches/venues
- Providing coffee/water service during visitations
- Delivering flowers, food, memorabilia to families’ homes, churches, long-term care facilities, hospices etc
- Driving funeral home vehicles for services, picking up family members etc
- Assisting funeral directors when required to organized bodies in and out; and on cremated remains
- Assisting funeral directors with cemetery duties
- Maintaining fleet vehicles; both exterior and interior cleaning, reporting any repairs, fueling, ensuring trunks are supplied with all necessary supplies
- Conducting exterior and interior inspections of facility to ensure high standards are maintained and when required, making sure follow up action is taken
- Performing parking lot management; directing families and guests where to park; placing funeral placards on vehicles when the service requires a procession
- Helping to register deaths and filing paperwork accurately and in the appropriate files in accordance with funeral home procedures
- Follow funeral home procedures when handling cremated remains
- Accepting donations for charities, as chosen by each family
- Acting as pallbearer when required
- Attend all staff meetings and participate in company training programs as required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned

- Ensure high levels of professionalism, caring and compassionate demeanor, and appearance are demonstrated in all interactions internal and external to the company
- Ensure high levels of quality, accuracy, and efficiency in department practices and processes
Qualifications, Skills, Attributes
Experience, Education, and Technical Skills
- 3+ years of experience in a similar or related environment
- Diploma or degree from a recognized college or university in a related discipline an asset
- A valid Ontario G class license is required
- Ability to follow clear directions and procedures and perform tasks in accordance with set procedures
- Moderate problem-solving skills are required to effectively deal with problems that may be encountered when off-site doing work independently. Will have to use judgement in those cases to determine best solution
- A basic knowledge of standards and procedures in Funeral Service would be an asset, although no specialized knowledge or experience is required to enter the position
- Moderate analytical reasoning is required to be able to adapt with any changes that arise and to effectively prioritize and shift duties
- Ability to perform moderate level administrative duties to coordinate and schedule tasks as required
- Moderate technical skills are required to assess any fleet maintenance that may be required
- Basic presentation skills would be an asset in ensuring that room set ups are appropriate for service
Working conditions and physical demands
Environment
- Work is performed primarily in the funeral home in controlled environment, but there are periods where the incumbent would be exposed to extreme weather conditions (hot/cold temperatures) for significant periods of time, both outside at cemeteries and also in the parking lot directing families
- Work is completed in an extended standing and walking position with the occasional need for sitting.
- Governed by strict deadlines, despite conflicting priorities and regular interruptions
Physical Effort
- Physical demands for the position are moderate to high depending on the day as regular lifting, pulling and reaching may be required when performing transfers at hospitals, private homes or nursing homes and also lifting flower stands and arranging caskets
Mental Effort
- Mental effort required to handle activities that require consistent concentration
- Incumbent is required to understand and follow very detailed directions and listen attentively
- Some mental strain/drain can result from regularly interacting with grieving
