**VP, Research & Development** at Photonic, you will work closely with the Chief Quantum Officer to execute on Photonic's overall technology vision, shaping its technical strategy, and driving its development execution. With your leadership skills, you will recruit world-class talent, manage the appropriate development methodologies and teams, and create the proper organizational structure to drive a high-performing development team to deliver quantum solutions to the market. You have the ability to bridge technology with business acumen and will bring experience in developing cutting-edge products to market. You will lead product development engineering efforts for the company. As an integral part of the Photonic executive team, you will develop and sustain a culture of fearless ambition, respect, and accountability throughout the R&D team.

WHAT WE NEED YOU TO DO
- Lead the development teams, providing both technical and people leadership, promoting a high-performance, results-driven environment with a strict adherence to project management requirements
- Work closely with the executive team, the product management team, and other internal stakeholders to help realize the company's vision and execute on strategy
- Direct, in alignment with the Chief Quantum Officer, the design and development of quantum hardware, software, and firmware
- Develop, direct, and maintain a system to manage all product development programs and projects, including a rigorous review process, in order to ensure attainment of key milestones and adherence to product specifications, timelines and budgets
- Articulate the strategic vision of the company and the product to the development team to ensure transparency, alignment, inspiration, and excitement to execute
- Lead the identification, monitoring, and - in conjunction with business development - the licensing/acquisition of new technologies and alliances that can be incorporated into the company's current and future products
- Attract, develop and retain top talent for the R&D function, while motivating team members to continually improve performance
- Work with the Chief Quantum Officer, lawyers, technical staff, and scientists to drive the R&D aspects of Photonic's Intellectual Property (IP) strategy, including support for patentable inventions
- Manage reporting and relationships with key stakeholders, including Photonic's Board of Directors, investors, legal advisors, government and other regulatory bodies
- Establish and manage the R&D operating budget
- Ensure that the research and development organization provides technical assistance to other departments

WHAT YOU BRING TO OUR TEAM
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in progressive research and product development leadership roles within global companies that develop, manufacture, and sell complex technology solutions
- Strong technical knowledge and vision, with a demonstrated history of leading engineering and development teams in the development of cutting-edge technology, bringing these products to market on time and within budget
- Bachelor's degree or a master's degree, or equivalent in Computing Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or related field
- Experience in setting and scaling the research and development function, with the proven ability to attract, inspire, motivate, and retain top-tier diverse talent
- Integrated software and hardware system engineering and project management skills
- Proven ability to establish, articulate and implement a concrete product development strategy that clearly aligns with corporate and commercial goals
- Experience with the R&D aspects of Canadian government programs including, but not limited to: SR&ED, IRAP, SDTC, WD, ISED, SIF, and more. Exposure to US government programs is a plus.
- Experience with distributed teams and business partners
- Quantum experience is not required but considered a plus
- Results-driven personality

- Experience working in a technology startup company
- Outstanding teamwork skills
- Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
- Exposure to quantum technologies is an asset
