**General Purpose**

Reporting jointly to the Associate Professor of Applied Ethology and Animal Welfare and Professor of Dairy Health Management in the Department of Population Medicine while working closely with faculty and staff in the Campbell Centre for the Study of Animal Welfare (CCSAW), the Saputo Dairy Care Program Manager will play a major role in sustaining the Saputo Dairy Care Program at the University of Guelph, established in 2015. This program provides formal learning opportunities for veterinary students, continuing education for practicing veterinarians, and professional development for the dairy industry on topics related to dairy cattle care and welfare.

**Duties and Responsibilities**

This position will focus on four key initiatives including developing and delivering: 1) Dairy Welfare CE courses/seminars/workshops for licensed veterinarians and dairy producers, 2) a Dairy Cattle Welfare Rotation for Phase IV DVM students, 3) a Dairy Cattle Welfare Scholars program, and 4) a Dairy Welfare Forum.

The series of Dairy Welfare courses, seminars and workshops will target dairy producers and veterinarians. Although topics will be similar, the level of detail, difficulty and skills training will be tailored for the different audiences. The workshops will include in-class training as well as demonstrations and wet labs. The Manager of the Saputo Dairy Care Program will be responsible for developing the content and teaching materials, for organizing the lectures and wet labs and will organize the instructors and also help teach these workshops. The Manager will work with CCSAW staff with regards to arranging venues, advertising and registering students and other participants.

In addition to these responsibilities, the manager will assist in offering week-long clinical rotations on dairy cattle welfare twice per academic year. These rotations are offered as a stream priority elective, which makes it available to a wide range of DVM students and give students in the Food Animal Stream first priority. The Manager of the Saputo Dairy Care Program will help to develop and update the content and teaching materials, organize field visits and wet labs and work with faculty in Population Medicine to teach a portion of this rotation. The Manager will also collaborate with Dairy Farmers of Ontario for potential training needs for producers and veterinarians related to proAction.

**Requirements**:

- Master's degree in Animal Welfare Science and Assessment, or equivalent graduate studies. DVM degree is considered an asset.
- One (1) year of relevant working experience.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrated ability to teach, coach, lead and manage others, time management and organizational skills.
- Understanding and knowledge of animal welfare science, animal care regulations, animal welfare assessment and comprehensive knowledge and understanding of veterinary medicine and the Canadian dairy industry.
- Thorough knowledge of relevant animal welfare regulations and policies including Canadian Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Dairy Cattle, PAWS Act, Criminal Code of Canada, on-farm animal welfare audits, DFC proAction are considered an asset.
- Working knowledge of computer programs such as word processing, spreadsheets and presentation software as well as strategic planning and implementation skills.
