Intermediate Aquatic Ecologist

The Environment and Land Group consists of ecologists, environmental assessment specialists, environmental planners, environmental engineers and environmental technologists who contribute to a broad range of experience in providing solutions to project challenges. The team assists clients on projects from concept to completion; providing domestic and international services to a variety of clients including municipalities, private sector proponents, aboriginal communities, government agencies and non-governmental organizations involved in public infrastructure, land development, golf and tourism, agriculture, oil and gas, renewable energy, transportation and mining.

**The Role**
As an Intermediate Aquatic Ecologist, your role will have many facets and you will primarily be responsible for the following:
- Leading and carrying out aquatic habitat assessments, fish and benthic community sampling, species at risk screenings, construction monitoring programs, and wildlife rescue/relocation operations;
- Collection, analysis and management of environmental data;
- Project management and coordination;
- Liaising with regulatory agencies (e.g., DFO, MNRF, and Conservation Authorities) and municipalities, and facilitating permitting and approvals;
- Mentoring and contributing to the development of junior technical staff;
- Preparation of technical reports, figures, and presentations;
- Business development and fostering long-term client relationships;
- Preparation and tracking of project proposals, budgets and schedules;
- Assist in the preparation of technical reports such as Environmental Impact Studies and Class Environmental Assessments;
- Providing support for senior and intermediate environmental professionals and engineers; and
- Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of existing and emerging regulatory requirements and best practices.
**Professional Knowledge & Qualifications**
- A degree or diploma in ecology, biology, natural resource management or another relevant field
- A minimum of 5 years of work experience related to aquatic ecology, preferably in a consulting role
- A sound understanding of the Fisheries Act, Species at Risk Act, Endangered Species Act, Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, Ontario and Canadian Environmental Assessment Acts, and Provincial Policy Statement
- Class 2 Electrofishing certification
- Ontario Benthos Biomonitoring Network (OBBN) certification
- Ontario Stream Assessment Protocol (OSAP) certification
- Formal training in fish identification and handling (ROM Fish ID Course)
- Certified Inspector of Erosion and Sediment Control (CISEC) certification
- A valid Pleasure Craft Operator Card and/or boating experience
- Experience using ArcGIS and/or CADD
- Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.) with demonstrated interest and ability to learn new systems
- Construction monitoring/inspection and/or engineering design review experience would be an asset
- Project management and/or supervisory experience would be an asset
- Land development, Environmental Assessment, International and/or Aboriginal project experience would be an asset

- Comfortable working outdoors, in and around water, in variable weather conditions
