Extreme heat events (EHE) arising from climate change have resulted in significant mortalities in Canada. Nature-based solutions (NBS) in the form of green/cool/reflective roofs, urban forest, and vegetated vertical surfaces have the potential to mitigate the effects of EHE, reduce heat vulnerability and enhance the thermal resilience of buildings, communities and cities. Prior studies have focused on optimizing NBS to improve urban scale environmental parameters, where very few consider how these changes alter the microclimate and affect human health. As such the PDF will conduct coupled microclimate and building simulations to investigate the effects of NBS configurations on the microclimate and indoor conditions, and instruct graduate students to collect third-party measurements data at an urban scale for model validation. The PDF will use the NRC developed bioheat models to predict thermal risk on human health, and develop quantification methods for thermal resilience. Finally, the PDF will integrate the results of the project tasks to develop a community-scale NBS design framework to protect human health and improve building-community thermal resilience.

**Education**:
Ph.D. in Building Physics or a closely related field.

**Experience**:

- Significant experience in- advanced building thermal simulation,
- overheating in buildings and thermal resilience,
- thermal comfort,
- physiological modelling of a human body
- The following may be considered assets:
- basic experience in microclimate modelling
- basic experience in computer programing using R, Python or other relevant languages

**Who is eligible?**:

- Fellowships will be for two years contingent on satisfactory progress achieved during the first year.- Fellows will work in a lab under the direct supervision of an NRC researcher.

**Compensation**:
The intent of this hiring action is to staff through the Postdoctoral Fellowships Program at the AsRO level, which is an early-career level position with a salary range of $74,230 to $103,093.
